The Panthers begin the season ranked No. 5 in the country by MaxPreps, returning four starters: Louisville-bound
Ariana Freeman (5-11, Sr., G),
Jonquanae Cole (6-4, Jr., C),
Jasmine Whitney (5-8, So., G) and
Lindsey Oblitey (5-8, Sr., G). The Panthers are the seven-time defending state champions, yet have never won the rugged Washington Catholic Athletic Conference. Depth comes from
Kendall Hunter (5-11, Jr., F),
Raven James (5-5, So., G) and
Kayla Meador (5-7, Jr., G).
2. Cosby (Midlothian)Coach: Rachel Mead
2012-13 Finish: 26-2 and lost in the regional semifinals
The Titans return three starters:
Dorothy Adomaco (6-1, Sr., F),
Skye Jefferson (6-1, Sr., C) and
Jocelyn Jones (5-10, So., G). Other starters will emerge from
Tyra Whitehead (6-1, So., F),
Ali Trani (5-7, Jr., G) and
Madison Howdyshell (5-10, Jr., F).
3. Princess Anne (Virginia Beach)Coach: Darnell Dozier
2012-13 Finish: 30-2 (10-0 Beach District), lost in Group AAA state finals to Lake Taylor 56-53
The Cavaliers return starters
Janayla White (6-2, Sr., C), a Radford commit,
Justyce Swango (5-5, Sr., G), a College of Charleston signee and
Gadiva Hubbard (5-8, Soph., G), who averaged 19.7 points per game and is being recruited by Virginia Tech and Virginia Commonwealth among others.
Mercedes Tapia (5-8, Jr., G) and
Danyael Goodhope (5-6, So., G) add depth. The Cavs will press and run, creating offense off their defense.
4. Stonewall Jackson (Manassas)Coach: Diana Martinez
2012-13 Finish: 24-4 and reached the Class 3A state semifinals
Leading the Raiders will be returning starters
Nicole Floyd (6-2, Sr., F), a Wake Forest commit,
Sydney Jordan (6-0, Jr., G) and
Rachel Burns (5-7, Jr., G).
Hayley Nordike (5-6, Jr., G) and
Kayla Hix (5-6, Sr., G) could round out the starting lineup.
5. Monacan (Richmond)Coach: Larry Starr
2012-13 Finish: 15-8 and lost in first round of district playoffs
The Chiefs could be the surprise team in the state. Returning starters are Richmond-bound
Micaela Parson (5-8, Sr., G),
Sydnei Archie (5-11, So., F), and
Kristen Bowse (5-3, Sr., G). Where the Chiefs become a real factor comes in impact freshmen
Megan Walker (6-0, Fr., G),
Alex Parson (5-5, Fr., G),
Jaiden Morris (5-8, Fr. F) and
Jasmine Norman (5-4, Fr., G). The Chiefs have advanced to four state quarterfinals over the past 11 years and coach Starr feels like this team will continue to improve throughout the season as the freshmen mature.
