Video: Ultimate Highlights of Marquis Spiker
The rangy, athletic receiver had four TD grabs on Friday. He's going to the University of Washington to play college football.
But before he does, 6-foot-3, 185-pound senior
Marquis Spiker of
Murrieta Valley (Murrieta, Calif.) evidently has much unattended business to take care of.
Spiker took care of most of it Friday, by becoming California's most prolific touchdown catcher. With 13 catches for 284 yards and four touchdowns, Spiker now has 70 TD catches for his career, surpassing the total of 66 set by Earvin Johnson of L.A. Catholic. Johnson's senior season was in 2000.
What made Friday's performance so special was that his team pulled off a 59-56 upset over Santa Margarita in the CIF Southern Section Division I playoffs.
Considered the toughest football bracket in America, Murrieta Valley now plays Centennial (Corona), the nation's No. 5 team which had all sorts of trouble before defeating Serra of Gardena, 35-21.
Spiker, ranked the No. 10 receiver in the country by 247Sports, now has 78 catches for 1,322 yards and 25 touchdowns this season for the Nighthawks (9-2).
