Each year since 2006, MaxPreps has recognized outstanding performers in high school football. America's source for high school sports continues the tradition to close out the 2020 season by naming the top player in each state. Selections are based on team success and individual excellence, in addition to local and state accolades.
Donovan Edwards of
West Bloomfield is the 2020 MaxPreps Michigan High School Football Player of the Year. The 5-foot-11, 205-pound running back has rushed for more than 1,000 yards and 17 touchdowns for the Lakers (10-1), who play unbeaten Davison for the Division I state championship Saturday.
According to 247Sports, Edwards is the No. 4-ranked senior running back in the country and the No. 44 player overall. He signed with Michigan in December, picking the Wolverines over a reported 42 other offers. The West Bloomfield star plans to head to Ann Arbor as soon as the season is over to begin classes.
As a junior, he rushed for 1,326 yards and 16 touchdowns. Also a receiving threat, Edwards had 33 catches for 419 yards and five touchdowns in 2019.
Each state's MaxPreps Player of the Year will be considered for inclusion in the MaxPreps All-America Team, which will be released Jan. 29.
