Video: Baker Mayfield high school highlightsIs former Oklahoma and Lake Travis star the answer at quarterback for Cleveland?
Baker Mayfield going No. 1 in the 2018 NFL Draft gives high
schools in the state of Texas their second straight top pick and fourth overall top pick since 1990.
The
new Cleveland Browns quarterback joins other Texas signal-callers
Matthew Stafford (2009) and Andrew Luck (2012), along with defensive end
Myles Garrett (2017), as top selections.
Many predicted either Sam Darnold or Josh Allen, a pair of California products, as the No. 1 selection. The Golden State leads all states with five top picks, including other signal-callers Jared Goff
(2016), Alex Smith (2005) and Carson Palmer (2003) and David Carr
(2002), along with wide receiver Keyshawn Johnson (1996).
Mayfield's selection helped Texas break a tie with Ohio, which also has three top picks, which includes Dan Wilkinson and Ki-Jana Carter in
consecutive years (1994 and 1995) and Orlando Pace in 1997.
Georgia
and Florida — high school football power states — have surprisingly
combined for just one No. 1 overall pick. Atlanta product Cam Newton
heard his name first in 2011, but the Sunshine State has been shutout
despite its status as a prospect
hotbed.
