MaxPreps is pleased to announce that the
East Providence (R.I.) Townies have officially been named to the 12th Annual MaxPreps Soccer Tour of Champions presented by the Army National Guard, which is in its sixth year honoring girls soccer.
This is one of the most prestigious team awards in all of high school sports and it is an exclusive honor reserved for the top 100 teams nationwide. In order to be eligible, a team must win a state championship and be highly ranked in the
MaxPreps National Rankings. For soccer, only 20 of the country's best are invited and with nearly 34,000 competing varsity teams. This puts the Townies ahead of 99.9 percent of their opponents!
On Sunday, Nov. 13 the East Providence Townies avenged their only loss of the season with a big shootout win over the previously unbeaten Johnston Panthers in the
RIIL Division III state title.
The Townies outlasted the Panthers in 80 minutes of regulation play, two 10-minute overtime periods and six rounds of penalty kicks. East Providence freshman forward Aaliyah Pattie scored the game-winning goal to lead the team to a 4-3 shootout win and its first-ever state championship.
Division III state champion East Providence finished the season highly ranked by MaxPreps –
No.1 in Division III,
No.1 in the state and
No.79 in the nation.
These incredible season achievements have earned the East Providence Townies an invitation to the 12th Annual Tour of Champions.
Please join us as we celebrate with the girls soccer team, coaching staff, students and fans on Wednesday, Feb. 1 at 1:10 p.m. during an assembly in the auditorium.
