News Journal No. 5-ranked William Penn has been turning heads throughout the state this season and continued to impress with a 74-51 win over conference opponent A.I. DuPont on Friday.
The Colonials had three players score at least 15 points in the contest. Devon Dorsey recorded a double-double with 15 points and 10 rebounds. Thomas Davis scored a game-high 19 points and also added six rebounds, while teammate Brian Oliver contributed 18 points.
Davis was relatively quiet in the first half, but went off in the third by scoring 10 of the Colonials’ 13 points in the quarter.
William Penn dominated the glass as Oliver finished the game just shy of a double-double with nine rebounds and Omar Skinner added seven boards of his own.
The Colonials outscored A.I. DuPont 28-11 in the fourth quarter.
The Tigers kept the game competitive thanks to a team-high 18 points by Daiquan Peterson, but 17 turnovers proved to much to overcome.
The Colonials are sitting pretty with an 11-1 (5-1 in conference) record while the Tigers fell to 9-3 (3-2).
Football: Coaches of the year announced
Caesar Rodney’s Mike Schonewolf and Milford’s Mike Tkach were named the state’s coaches of the year by the Delaware Interscholastic Football Coaches Association on Monday night. Both teams won state championships this season, with CR taking home the Division I title and Milford winning the Division II championship.
Tkach is the first coach from Milford to be honored as coach of the year. Schonewolf became the third coach from CR to be given the honor, and is the first from the school since 1993.
Tkach has coached at Milford for seven seasons and brought home the Buccaneers’ first state title this fall. Schonewolf paid his dues as an assistant at CR for 15 seasons before being promoted to head coach in 2007.
Both coaches cited their coaching staffs and players as main reasons for being honored with the award.
Football: Newark linemen verbally commits to Miami
Newark’s big, first team All-State lineman Malcolm Bunche has issued a verbal commitment to the University of Miami.
Bunche, 6-foot-6 and 320 pounds, committed to Rutgers earlier in the season, but changed his mind in November. The highly-touted senior narrowed down his choices to Rutgers, Miami and Maryland.
