THE BUZZWhen
St. Andrew's (Middletown, Del.) takes the field Friday in its baseball opener against St. Thomas More, it will mark the beginning of Bob Colburn's 50th season at the helm of the Cardinals program. To put it in perspective, his first year managing in 1960 was the same year John F. Kennedy was elected president.
"I really enjoy working with young people and the game of baseball affords so many opportunities to teach life values," Colburn, who missed the 1973 season while on sabbatical, said in an e-mail. "Things such as: learning to cope with a teammate's mistake which could affect your personal stats, learning to make a commitment to a group of teammates, learning to deal with mistakes and failure such as striking out in a key situation, and learning to sacrifice yourself for the good of the team like advancing a runner with a bunt.
"The main thing that keeps me going is working with players and seeing them grow."
