Martinek Goes Big

Hopatcong senior running back Joe Martinek rushed for a school record 396 yards on 31 carries and scored four touchdowns to lead the Chiefs to a convincing, 34-12 victory
over Jefferson, their third-straight win.
ÿ
Martinek scored on runs of 77, 75, 38, and 15 yards. He has rushed for 939 yards and eight touchdowns this season.

Martinek is closing in on the state career rushing record of 6,720 yards set in 2003 by Kenny Cattouse of Keyport. Martinek has 6,439.

"Joe ran really strong," Hopatcong coach Paul Reduzzi said. "Jefferson did a good job attacking at the line, but Joe never stopped moving his feet. He got a ton of yards after the first hit. Our guys up front did a much better job staying on blocks."

Sophomore tailback Ryan Donohue scored three touchdowns in the second half to lead St. Joseph's of Montvale to a 31-21 comeback victory over Xaverian Brothers of

Donohue, a 6-0, 195-pound sophomore, bullied his way to 120 rushing yards on 20 carries behind an offensive line that wore down the Xaverian defense.

"He did it last week, too," St. Joseph's head coach Tony Karcich said. "We were down against Eastside when (Wayne) Drummond got hurt, and (Donohue) came out in the second half and he did a great job. He doesn't have that real acceleration, but he's a tough kid and a tough runner."
