
Torrey Pines came up with a big win against Assumption at the Durango Fall Classic, vaulting the Falcons into the No. 2 position in this week's rankings.

Torrey Pines (San Diego) lived up to its preseason hype by winning the prestigious Durango Volleyball Invitational held over the weekend in Las Vegas. And in the process, Torrey Pines jumped from No. 7 to No. 2 in the latest MaxPreps Xcellent 25 National Volleyball Rankings presented by the Army National Guard.
In winning all seven of its matches in Las Vegas, the Falcons (8-0) placed four players on the All-Tournament Team and defeated previous No. 2 Assumption (Louisville, Ky.) in the finals, 2-1 (25-22, 14-25, 25-16).

The victory over Assumption also ended the Louisville team's winning streak, which reached 50 straight after winning a 2-0 semifinal match against Corona Del Mar (Calif.). The Rockets are 22-1 on the season and drop to No. 3 in the latest Top 25 poll.
Papillion LaVista-South (Papillion, Neb.) held on to the No. 1 spot with a pair of wins, pushing its winning streak to 90.
Read Tom Mauldin's feature on the Rolfzen twins from Papillion-LaVista SouthFour teams - Horizon (Scottsdale, Ariz.), Doherty (Colorado Springs, Colo), Quincy (Ill.) and Lakeville North (Minn.) - moved into the Top 25 for the first time this season and a fifth, Carroll (Southlake, Texas), returned to the Top 25. Five that were ranked a week ago dropped out.
Three Top 25 teams have pivotal contests coming up in the next eight days:
- On Thursday, No. 14 Bishop Miege (Shawnee Mission, Kan.) takes on St. James Academy (Lenexa, Kan.), 7-1 this season and winners of 98 of its last 101 matches.
- On Sept. 25, No. 16 Doherty hosts Colorado Springs rival No. 25 Cheyenne Mountain.
- On Tuesday, No. 23 Whitewater (Fayetteville, Ga.) visits 26-1 McIntosh (Peachtree, Ga.). Whitewater is 25-1.

2. (7) Torrey Pines (San Diego), 8-0The Falcons opened their season Wednesday with a win over Fallbrook, then captured the Durango Invitational in Las Vegas. TP defeated teams from Utah, British Columbia (Canada), Kentucky and California in claiming the tournament title. The Falcons travel to Canyon Crest Wednesday.

5. (5) Punahou (Honolulu), 14-0Punahou, which last lost in 2010, defeated Mid-Pacific Institute at home and on the road last week. Sacred Hearts hosts Punahou Tuesday.

Kelsey Crawford, Mitty won the gold at its own tournament and handed St. Francis (Sacramento) its first loss of the season in the finals. Mitty travels to San Jose for the Presentation Tournament on Saturday.
7. (8) Lafayette (Wildwood, Mo.), 15-0The Lancers swept through their second-straight tournament, capturing the Springfield Tournament without a blemish. The Lancers have won all 30 games they've played this season. They host Eureka and Mehlville (St. Louis) Tuesday and Thursday.
8. (9) Carmel (Ind.), 18-0In winning the Marian Central Invitational last Saturday, Carmel stayed undefeated. The Greyhounds, who have yet to lose a game this season, host North Central (Indianapolis) Tuesday and Noblesville (Carmel) Wednesday.

9. (10) Coppell (Texas), 30-2With convincing wins over McKinney, Boyd (McKinney) and Allen, the Cowgirls reached 30 wins on the season for the third-straight year and sixth time in seven years. Coppell hosts Boyd on Tuesday and Hebron Friday.
10. (15) Mount Notre Dame (Cincinnati), 11-0 With wins over Ursuline (3-1), Walsh Jesuit (2-0) and Magnificent (2-0), MND improves to 11-0. A winners of 18 straight, MND travels to Seton Tuesday and hosts McAuley (Cincinnati) Thursday.
11. (11) Barnstable (Hyannis, Mass.), 2-0The Red Raiders ran their win streak to 25 in a row with blowouts over Southwest Falmouth and Brockton. The Red Raiders outscored their opponents 150-46. Bridgewater-Raynham visits Barnstable Wednesday and North Quincy hosts the Red Raiders on Thursday.
12. (14) Benet Academy (Lisle, Ill.), 14-0Led by tournament MVP
Hannah Kaminsky, Benet won the 16-team Wheaton Classic, including a win over highly regarded Marist in the finals. The Redwings travel to East/North St. Charles Friday.
13. (13) Chaparral (Parker, Colo.), 8-1The Wolverines defeated Grandview (Aurora) and Rock Canyon (Highlands Park) for their sixth-straight victory since having their 56-game winning streak snapped. Chaparral plays at Heritage (Littleton) Thursday.
14. (16) Bishop Miege (Shawnee Mission, Kan.), 12-1The Stags won 10 of 11 games in winning five matches to improve to 12-1. Their key match this week is a Thursday showdown with St. James Academy (Lenexa, Kan.). SJA has won 98 of its last 101 matches and is 7-1 in 2012.
15. (NR) Horizon (Scottsdale, Ariz.), 19-2After a 14-0 start, Horizon went 5-2 in taking fifth place at the Durango Invitational. The Huskies host Desert Mountain (Scottsdale) on Wednesday and Boulder Creek (Anthem) Thursday.

Haleigh Washington makes them a team to watch as they climb in the rankings. They have won all 22 games they've played this season. Doherty has a pair of matches before hosting rival No. 23 Cheyenne Mountain on Sept. 25.
17. (17) St. Ursula Academy (Toledo, Ohio), 10-1After losing 2-1 to Ursuline on Saturday, SUA blanked Butler, 2-0.
18. (NR) Lakeville North (Minn.), 10-0With 3-0 wins over Lakeville South and Kennedy (Bloomington), the Panthers move to 10-0 and travel to Apple Valley on Tuesday.
19. (NR) Carroll (Southlake, Texas), 30-3 Since losing back-to-back matches four weeks ago, the Dragons have won 19 of 20 matches. The Dragons visit Richland (North Richland Hills) Tuesday and host Keller Friday.
20. (21) Reagan (San Antonio), 29-2Reagan recorded 3-0 wins over Lee and Madison to run its win streak to 14. The Rattlers host MacArthur (San Antonio) Tuesday and visit John (San Antonio) Friday.
21. (23) Yorktown (Ind.), 16-1Since losing Aug. 28, YHS has won eight straight, dropping just one game out of 22. Yorktown travels to 11-3 Cowan Wednesday.

23. (24) Whitewater (Fayetteville, Ga.), 25-1The 5A Hounds have rebounded nicely since seeing their 23-game winning streak snapped. Whitewater travels to Peachtree to take on 26-1 McIntosh on Tuesday. The Wildcats have won 52 of 56 games this season.
24. (21) Venice (Fla.) 8-1After losing in five sets to unbeaten Fort Myers (25-21, 25-20, 22-25, 21-25 and 14-16), the Indians outscored Charlotte 75-35 in a 3-0 match victory. Venice hosts Sarasota on Wednesday and Academy of the Holy Names (Tampa) on Friday.
25. (NR) Quincy (Ill.), 17-0Winning 34 of their 36 games this season, Quincy is 17-0 on the season. Led by
India Green, the Blue Devils visit O'Fallon on Monday.
