The high school football season in Massachusetts came to a close over the weekend.
Catholic Memorial (West Roxbury) was among the victors with an emphatic 42-18 win over King Philip Regional at Gillette Stadium to claim the Division 2 championship. That victory helped propel the Knights to the No. 1 ranking in the final Massachusetts MaxPreps Top 25.
Catholic Memorial took a commanding 21-3 lead into the final quarter, before adding three more touchdowns to take the sting out of losing in the 2019 and 2018 state Division 1 finals. It was the Knights first title in 43 yards and the 13th for legendary coach John DiBiaso.
Following a 4-0 COVID-shortened spring, the Knights have now won 16 straight and 27 of their last 28. They dominated in 2021 by outscoring opponents 541-142 with their closest margin of victory being 16 points.
In the championship game, Catholic Memorial piled up 446 yards according to the
Boston Globe. Quarterback JC Petrongolo needed to complete seven passes to throw for four touchdowns and the running game was led by Carson Harwood (16 carries, 135 yards) and Datrell Jones (9, 95, touchdown).
