The
Fayetteville-Manlius (Manlius, N.Y.) girls cross country team scored a record-low 27 points while dominating the seventh Nike Cross Nationals for a record fifth consecutive year Saturday in Portland, Ore. The Hornets placed their first five runners among the meet's top 29 to easily surpass the previous record low score of 51 points.
The girls individual title was won by
Plano (Texas) senior Rachel Johnson, a Baylor recruit, who was clocked in 18 minutes, 18.6 seconds.
On the boys' side,
Arcadia (Calif.) captured the team championship with 92 points.
Sandburg (Orland Park, Ill.) superstar Lukas Verzbicas won the individual title in 15:59.2. He is the first runner to win the Nike and Foot Locker (last year) national championships. Verzbicas will defend his Foot Locker crown Saturday in San Diego.
The times were slower than anticipated due to meet conditions, which included muddy ground, strong winds and cool temperatures.

Though just 5-foot-8,
Josiah Monroe passed for 458 yards, ran for 118 yards and accounted for four touchdowns in a loss as Poteet (Mesquite, Texas) defeated Bastrop (Texas), 42-35, during the Class 4A Division II state quarterfinals.

Cortez Frizell (5-9, 190) finished his senior year with 46 touchdowns – one short of the Mississippi state record.

Alcoa (Tenn.) defeated Goodpasture (Madison, Tenn.), 56-14, to win its seventh consecutive Class 3A state title, 12th overall and extend its current winning streak to 43 games.

Mullen (Denver, Colo.) routed previously unbeaten Regis Jesuit (Aurora, Colo.), 37-6, before a crowd of 15,257 to win its third consecutive Class 5A state title and extend its winning streak to 33 games. The Mustangs outscored their 14 opponents by a huge 517-89 margin and are being viewed as one of the state's best-ever teams.

O. Perry Walker (New Orleans, La.) outlasted Bastrop (La.), 26-20, in four overtimes in the Class 4A state quarterfinals.

St. George's (Collierville, Tenn.) has retired at age 71 as the winningest coach in Tennessee history with 362 victories.

Phillipsburg (N.J.) coach Bob Stem has retired at age 71 with a 285-98-6 record and two state championships during his 34-year career.
BASKETBALL: TWO TRIPLE-DOUBLES IN THE SAME GAMEShawn Valentine and
Isaiah Gans, who both are 6-9, had triple-doubles to lead
Phelps (Malvern, Pa.) to an 85-63 victory over Valley Forge Military Academy (Valley Forge, Pa.). Valentine collected 16 points, 11 rebounds and 11 assists, while Gans had 18 points, 12 blocked shots and 10 rebounds.

Mission Viejo (Calif.) edged Colony (Ontario, Calif.), 60-56.

Brandon Ashley, one of the nation's premier juniors, suffered a bruised right knee last week and is "day to day," according to Bishop O'Dowd (Oakland, Calif.) athletic director Mike Bowler.
* On the girls side, Athens (Troy, Mich.) nipped Stoney Creek (Rochester Hills, Mich.), 53-52, despite a school-record 42 points by junior guard Gabby Yurik.
* Kayla Spohn had a triple-double (17 points, 15 rebounds and 10 blocks) as Lakeville (Otisville, Mich.) defeated Mt. Morris (Mich.), 65-45.
* Milestone coaching victories were recorded last week by Mary Jo Huismann of
Mother of Mercy (Cincinnati, Ohio), No. 600; Larry White of
Red Boiling Springs (Tenn.), No. 500; and Steve Fletcher of
Denbigh Baptist Christian (Newport News, Va.), No. 300.
POTPOURRIPat O'Neil has retired as head baseball coach at
Brownsburg (Ind.). O'Neil compiled a 332-101 record and after two state runner-up finishes, piloted the Bulldogs to a perfect 35-0 record and the large-school state championship in 2005.
