Fans in Texas take their high school football very seriously, so anyone who tries to rank the best games ever played is asking for trouble. Ask fans about the best games ever and they'll give you a 100 different answers — and they could all be right.

So when I was talking to coaches and players for "Friday Night Flashback," a Kindle book I published recently on Amazon, I never had the intention of putting together a "best of" compilation. I simply wanted to talk with coaches and players about some incredible playoff games — some of which I had covered — and get their memories of the games and how they feel about them years later.
In some cases, players and coaches revealed details I didn't know about some unforgettable plays I thought I knew so well. They were all fun to talk with, including the late, great John Outlaw of
Lufkin High School, who talked with me about his state championship team a few months before passing away.
I love high school football, and I'm fortunate that The Dallas Morning News has allowed me to be a part of it for so many years. High school football fans in Texas are as passionate as anywhere in the country, and I always enjoy reminiscing with them about the greatest games ever played.
"Friday Night Flashback: Classic Texas High School Football Games, as Remembered by Coaches and Players" is now available on Amazon.com. It can be viewed on Kindle devices and on free Kindle apps for the iPhone, iPad and Android.
