If Friday's District 7-6A showdown between Trinity (Euless) and Carroll (Southlake) has a playoff feel, there is good reason.
The two football programs represent eight state championships since 2002, three by Trinity and five by Carroll.
Both will step into Dragon Stadium with perfect records. Trinity (7-0) is No. 8 and Carroll (6-0) is No. 10 in this week's MaxPreps Texas Top 25.
Trinity, coached by Steve Lineweaver, owns a district winning streak of 62 games, dating to the final regular-season game of the 2005 season. The Trojans this season have not given up a touchdown in their three district wins.
If the game is close, Carroll might have an advantage. Three of the Dragons' wins have come by a total of eight points. Hal Wasson's team is 2-0 in district play.
Adding to the intrigue, Lineweaver's son Aaron is a Carroll assistant coach.
News of two of North Texas' powers being placed in the same district in the University Interscholastic League's biennial realignment created quite a buzz eight months ago.
Despite being located only 12 miles apart, Trinity and Carroll were grouped in separate districts in past years, limiting head-to-head meetings to the state playoffs.
They split third-round playoff meetings the last two seasons — Trinity winning 42-38 last year following Carroll's 16-7 triumph in 2012.
More memorable was a second-round match-up in 2006 before 46,339 spectators at Texas Stadium, won by Carroll 22-21. Both teams were coming off state championship seasons in 2005. Carroll went on that season to win its third straight state title.
