Top 10 high school running backs in California for 2019

None, as of yet, have made a huge impact on the college or NFL scene, though Najee Harris of Antioch, the nation's top-rated running back from 2017, is a probable starter this season at Alabama. From the same recruiting class, Stephen Carr of Summit (Fontana), has shown some flashes of stardom at USC.

The current lot of prep runners from California is truly star studded, with both highly productive and highly rated standouts, including perhaps the best tailback from the Class of 2022.

10. Cameron Skattebo — Rio Linda
File this lad under "production." The 5-foot-10, 200-pound incoming senior doesn't have a recruiting ranking, but he's impossible to leave off the list after he rushed for 3,550 yards (11.5 per carry) and 42 touchdowns last year, leading the Knights (13-2) to a 38-35 5-AA state title win over San Gorgonio. In that game, Skattebo rushed 31 times for 393 yards and three touchdowns.

9. Byron Cardwell — St. Augustine (San Diego)
The 6-foot, 200-pound incoming junior rushed for 1,096 yards and 13 touchdowns and caught 19 passes for 405 yards and two more scores for the 10-4 Saints last season. A two-sport standout — he also excels at basketball — Cardwell already has football offers from USC, UCLA, Utah, Washington State and Nebraska.

8. Jyden King — Calabasas
The 6-1, 204-pound rising senior has committed to Washington State and is rated the No. 44 recruit in the state overall. Originally from Las Vegas, he also has offers from Arizona, Arizona State, Fresno State and Utah. King figures to be the team's big running threat in a wide open offense that features 5-star receiver Johnny Wilson and 4-star quarterback Jaden Casey.

7. Isaiah Newell — Las Lomas (Walnut Creek)
The 6-3, 220-pound incoming senior is a load to bring down and has good moves and speed. It led to more than 2,000 yards rushing as a junior, a 12-1 season for the Knights and 15 college offers, including Oregon and Oregon State, Colorado and Kansas State.

6. Chris Street — JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano)
The 5-11, 205-pound incoming senior rushed for 1,342 yards and 17 touchdowns last season in one of the hottest recruiting spots in the country. With 11 offers on the table, Street has already picked Cal, but Arizona, Florida and Boston College hope he changes his mind. 5. JoJuan Collins — Narbonne (Harbor City)
The 6-1, 205-pound rising senior averaged nearly 11 yards per carry last season, but figures to get even more touches in 2019 for one of the country's top teams. He rushed for 664 yards and nine scores last season. Utilizing good speed, balance and vision, Collins has secured 14 college offers, including Auburn, Florida and Georgia.

4. Nathaniel Jones — St. John Bosco (Bellflower)
A torn ACL ended Jones' 2018 season early, but he figures to be the featured back for one of the nation's top five teams. He had a college body as a freshman, said 247Sports recruiting expert Greg Biggins, and big things were expected last season. The injury hasn't deterred college recruiters one bit, as Arizona State, Florida, Colorado and Utah all made offers, but his first choice all along was UCLA, where he committed to late last month.

3. Raleek Brown — Edison (Stockton)
The most intriguing player on the list, the 5-7, 175-pound incoming sophomore rushed for 1,688 yards and 18 touchdowns last year and was a first team MaxPreps freshman All-American. He's already secured 18 college offers, including from Alabama, Florida State and Michigan. On top of his fantastic burst and moves, he's also an exceptional receiver with 31 receptions for 741 yards and nine touchdowns. He may be the top overall recruit in the 2022 class.

2. Daniyel Ngata — Folsom
The No. 48 recruit nationally overall from the Class of 2020, Ngata is a complete back. The 5-9, 185-pound back has 24 offers but remains uncommitted. Among his top choices are Texas A&M, Oregon, Arizona State, Oklahoma State and Clemson, where his wide receiver brother Joseph will be a freshman in 2019. Daniyel has rushed for 1,734 career yards and 21 touchdowns in Folsom's wide open spread passing attack. He's been equally effective as a receiver with 73 career catches for 1,044 yards and 14 touchdowns. Beyond his versatility catching and running, he's also a tremendous blocker.

1. Kendall Milton — Buchanan (Clovis)
His uncle, Kevin Hardy, was the No. 2 pick in the 1996 NFL draft. At 6-2, 220, Milton utilizes a rare blend of power and speed. The No. 3-rated running back in the country from the Class of 2020 has 39 college offers, including from Alabama, Georgia, LSU, Ohio State and Miami. According to 247Sports recruiting expert Brandon Huffman: "(Milton) runs with a unique blend of power, speed and balance. Shows more shiftiness than you'd expect from a back his size. His balance is top-notch. Can take a hit and not lose his base and gains significant yards after contact. Can run through holes and sees them before they open. Can hit the hole and go."
