Video: John Stephen Jones goes off
Grandson of Cowboy's owner Jerry Jones throws for 457 yards and six touchdowns in playoff win.
It was a rough Sunday night for Dallas football fans, watching their beloved Cowboys lose decisively at home to the Eagles. They'll get a chance to wipe away that memory Thanksgiving against the Chargers.
Cowboys' owner Jerry Jones always has a good diversion, win or lose.
The 2017 NFL Hall of Fame inductee had plenty to root for Saturday when his grandson
John Stephen Jones had a career night during a 56-49 Texas 5A-D1 first-round playoff win for
Highland Park (Dallas) over Texas.
The younger Jones, who led Highland Park to a 2016 state title, completed 22-of-30 passes for 457 yards and six touchdowns. He also ran for a score, a 1-yard run with 2:27 left that put Highland Park up 56-42.
Jones completed TD passes of 70, 39, 32, 8, 19 and 39 yards. Receivers
Cade Saustad (5 catches, 176 yards, 3 touchdowns) and
Paxton Alexander (6-159-1) had huge games.
The 5-foot-10, 175-pound Jones doesn't have any college offers yet,
but he's had quite a career already. Last season he threw for 3,017
yards and 30 touchdowns leading the Scots to a state 5A-1 title.
He's already topped those numbers in 11 games, by completing 174 of 247 passes (70.9 percent) for 3,102 yards and 44 touchdowns and just three interceptions. He's also rushed for 292 yards and four scores. He's a legitimate Texas 5A Player of the Year candidate.
He has a chance to improve those number Friday when Highland Park plays McKinley North in another elimination game.
