Drummond, a 6-foot-10, 255-pound center who played last season at
St. Thomas More (Oakdale, Conn.) and was expected to be with
Wilbraham & Monson Academy (Wilbraham, Mass.) for the 2011-12 season, made a surprise announcement via Twitter a little after 8 p.m. Friday night.
"It's official I'm heading to the university of connecticut to be a husky this year! Do I hear #repeat #huskyfam @aoriakhi34," Drummond posted.
Hurdles remain for a fast-tracked enrollment at Connecticut, according to Dom Amore of the Hartford Courant. The Middletown, Conn., native must get through the NCAA clearinghouse and perhaps more complicated is that Husky head coach Jim Calhoun has no remaining scholarships to offer for this season.
Drummond's arrival in Storrs would be a significant boost for the national champions. Originally a member of the 2011 class before re-classifying two years ago, he is a physically mature athlete with the ability to dominate on both ends. He was a member of USA Basketball's gold medal squad at the FIBA U17 World Championships last summer in Germany.
Drummond has left the media and fans guessing throughout much of his recruitment, offering few insights into his decision-making process or clues as to which schools were under serious consideration. That led many to believe he was positioning himself to skip college and enter the 2012 NBA draft.
