MaxPreps Student SectionPioneer (Woodland, Calif.) High School opened in the fall of 2003, competing at the Varsity Softball level for the first time in the spring of 2005. The 2004 campaign consisted of only a young Junior Varsity team. Once they got off and running, the Pioneer Lady Patriots Varsity Softball team has been nearly indestructible; compiling an overall record of 135-34-2 over six seasons, with the seventh in progress. In these seven varsity seasons, Pioneer has relished in success. Capturing six league titles and celebrating one Sac-Joaquin Section Division-IV title in 2006. The 2006 team went 22-0-1; the best overall season record to date. The 2008 squad was close to earning another section title, but finished runner up to cross-town rival Woodland High School in the Sac-Joaquin Section Division-III Playoffs. The team has twice gone undefeated in conference play as part of the Golden Empire League and in the Tri-County Conference. Currently, the 2011 Lady Patriots are ranked #22 in the nation, #7 in California and #1 in Sac-Joaquin Section as of April 28, 2011.

Although Pioneer boasts a cumulative winning percentage of 0.789 since the school's inception, winning games and stormy February weather have been the only constants throughout.
In 2004, the Junior Varsity team practiced on the blacktop at Pioneer and at a local recreation field because the school had no backstops. The team wore black and gold silky uniforms with matching shorts. Until 2008 when button-up Intensity jerseys and baseball pants were introduced. Looking back, the silky jerseys are considered retro. Another aspect of change occurred in 2006 when Rotary Field, home of the Lady Patriots, put up an official outfield fence.
However, Pioneer has always enjoyed the benefits of rallying behind a dominant pitcher in the circle and the strategic influence of a strong battery-mate behind the plate. Though the dynamics of the team has changed over the years as the composition of the roster has fluctuated from thirteen to seventeen players; Pioneer has remained one of the most elite competitors in the game.
For several athletes in the past who have worn Patriot uniforms, their memorable athletic careers did not end upon graduation. 2006 graduate Christina Merrida went on to play for the East Carolina Pirates. Bailey Micetich, 2008 graduate, is currently a junior pitcher on staff at San Diego State University. Both Merrida and Micetich received athletic scholarships.
Over the course of eight total seasons, Pioneer has been coached by Linda Merrida. Since 2004, there have been several different people assisting the team. Erin Souza, Kari Cardin, Bob Akey, Terry Walker, Leslie Young, Tom Roach, Kelly Johnson, and Bryan Merrida have generously donated their time and knowledge. As part of maintaining this championship caliber program, Pioneer has a solid fan base and wonderful support staff. Marge Yosenick, affectionately known as "Grandma Marge", has managed the Snack Shack for as long as I can remember.
Pioneer's team is recognized around the local area for their hard work, dedication, strong work ethic, and success. That is achieved due to talent and competitive spirit. One attribute that will continue to define the team for years to come, is the pride of representing the Black & Gold.
When I think of Pioneer Softball, I value the prestigious winning tradition and beauty of the softball field. Due to the countless volunteer hours spent maintaining the upkeep of the diamond; Pioneer has the best field in Northern California. When each season ends, tears are cried, hugs are abundant, and victory is a sweet memory. No matter where Pioneer's athletes go in life, Rotary Field will always be a special place to call "Home".
