There was some unfinished business to take care of last weekend as the regular season came to a close in Ohio, like Jon Diebler entrenching his name at the top of the state's all-time career scoring list.
The Upper Sandusky senior ended a year-long chase with a two-handed dunk Friday night, giving him 2,960 points and pushing past Jay Burson for one of the state's most coveted individual records. Now, Diebler turns his attention to the tournament where he hopes to take the Rams back to Columbus before ending his amazing career.
Jonathan Alder's Lauren Prochaska put on a scoring exhibition of her own Feb. 26, dropping in 52 points recently in a sectional semifinal win over Amanda-Clearcreek. Prochaska scored all but 11 of the Pioneers' points in the 63-40 victory.
Tournament Tidbits
Former University of Dayton coach Don Donoher, now an assistant for Middletown Bishop Fenwick, watched over the court at UD Arena once again as Fenwick won a Division III Sectional Semifinal over Dixie Monday night.the biggest upset to date in the tournament is without doubt Dayton Carroll downing Indian Lake, 55-52, in the Division II Sectional Finals. The Lakers were the No. 1 team in the state, but for the second-consecutive season their season ended with a loss to Carroll.
Wrestling World Converges on Columbus
Every year the state is given a loud reminder that basketball is not the only game in town.
When the mats are rolled out and the doors opened, thousands of spectators, participants and coaches flood into the Schottenstein Center for the OHSAA State Wrestling Finals.
The two schools most synonymous with Ohio wrestling are Lakewood St. Edward (Division I) and St. Paris Graham (Division II), both are nationally-ranked squads.
St. Edward will have a participant in all 14 weight divisions and look poised for an 11th-consecutive D-I state title. The Falcons sent 12 wrestlers to Columbus and will be in perfect position for their seventh-consecutive title in D-II.
Unmatched Dynasty in the Pool
St. Xavier swim coach Jim Brower notched his 14th title this past weekend, a new OHSAA swim record. It was also the ninth-consecutive title for the Bombers in D-I.
X was paced by David Macko, who won the 500 meter in record-setting time. The previous record was held by Olympic gold medalist Dan Ketchum.
