Don Bosco Prep (Ramsey, N.J.) ran away with a surprisingly lopsided 33-6 football victory over
St. Ignatius (Cleveland, Ohio) Saturday afternoon in Stuebenville, Ohio before an estimated crowd of 10,000.
The Ironmen, ranked No. 17 in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25, were led by senior running back
Paul Canevari (6-foot, 215), who carried 26 times for 265 yards and two touchdowns.
Pacing their outstanding defense were junior free safety
Kyle Sakowski (6-0, 190), who made two interceptions, and junior tackle
Darius Hamilton (6-4, 240), who had three sacks.
Don Bosco took a quick 14-0 lead in the first quarter and was up 33-0 in the fourth quarter when the Wildcats scored their only touchdown on an 87-yard kickoff return by
David Joseph.
“I was a little shocked being able to hold them to so little points,” Don Bosco defensive coordinator Dan Marangi told MaxPreps. “We’ll enjoy this tonight, but next week is the really big one.”
Marangi was referring to next Saturday afternoon’s encounter at arch rival Bergen Catholic (Oradell, N.J.), which is coached by former Don Bosco assistant football coach/athletic director Nunzio Campanile.
A huge crowd between 12,000 and 15,000 is anticipated, causing officials to bring in extra bleachers.
