4A No. 2 Cathedral topped 2A No. 1 Heritage Christian 9-5 in the City Tournament, marking the seventh straight season the Irish have claimed the title as the best team in Indianapolis.
For the very first time this year, however, Cathedral ace Dillon Peters allowed a run. A home run, to be exact.
Peters, a Texas recruit, took a 2-0 lead to the mound in the fourth inning having retired the first nine batters he faced. Cam McWilliams stepped to the plate and promptly cut Cathedral’s lead in half with a shot to right field.
The Irish then pushed their advantage to 5-1 in the bottom of the inning behind an RBI triple from freshman Luke Cureton and an RBI double from fellow freshman Austin Sparks, who scored an unearned run to cap the beginning. The Eagles gave the game away in the fifth inning, allowing four runs on five wild pitches, three walks and a pair of errors, although they managed two runs in the sixth inning and one more in the seventh.
Heritage Christian (19-6) topped Cardinal Ritter 5-1 on Saturday and will travel to Covenant Christian on Tuesday. Cathedral will host Brebeuf on Tuesday.
Brebeuf wins first county title in nearly 40 years
It took nine innings, but Brebeuf secured the Marion County title with a 5-4 win over Lawrence Central at Victory Field. Shortstop Tres Eberhardt hit a triple into centerfield that turned into the game-winning run on an error on the throw to the infield. The Braves earned their first county championship since 1971.
Brebeuf held Lawrence Central off the board through the first four innings, thanks in large part to strong defense. The Tigers finally scored in the fifth inning when Brandon Krieg drove in a pair of runs with a single. Lawrence Central would go on to score two more runs in the fifth inning, giving the Tigers what seemed to be a comfortable lead. Brebeuf staged a comeback in the sixth inning behind a double from John Krasich, who then scored on a single by Dakota Thatcher. Krasich also picked up the win by pitching 3 1/3 scoreless innings.
Girls tennis: Cathedral scores sixth straight city title
The No. 1 Cathedal girls tennis team earned its sixth straight city title, topping No. 24 Indianapolis Brebeuf in all five events. The Irish beat Brebeuf 4-1 earlier in the year but were without their No. 1 and No. 2 singles players. Morgan Paras (6-1, 6-1) won at No. 3 singles, while the No. 1 doubles team of Meghan Fry and Megan Adams (6-4, 6-0), and the No. 2 doubles team of Carlene Eckhart and Marika Edwards (6-4, 6-1), also earned wins.
