The boys basketball season for public schools tipped off this week with most teams debuting on Monday or Tuesday. On opening night, the two-time defending Class 4A champion and MaxPreps' 2009-10 national champion
Yates (Houston) began their title defense with a 128-65 win over Dickinson at Delmar Fieldhouse on Monday. The Lions were far from perfect but showcased their traditional full-court press and up-tempo style that helped them roar to a 34-0 record last year. The win was their 59th consecutive dating back to the 2008-09 season.
On Tuesday, the
La Marque Cougars, ranked No. 3 in the state by the Texas Association of Basketball Coaches, made a statement by knocking off defending Class 5A state champion Bush 103-71 before a raucous home crowd. Texas signee
Julien Lewis led all scorers with 37 points in the win. The Broncos, ranked No. 2 in Class 5A in the state and 25th overall in the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 presented by the Army National Guard, will try to get back on the winning track this weekend in the McDonald's Texas Invitational in Pasadena.
