Karl Bostick sacked Matt Magarity, forcing a fumble with five seconds left, to help
Bergen Catholic (Oradell, N.J.) launch its football season with a nail-biting 22-21 victory over visiting
LaSalle College (Wyndmoor, Pa.). Bostick led the Crusaders with nine tackles.
The victory marked the debut of head coach Nunzio Campanile, the former offensive coordinator at defending national champion Don Bosco Prep who replaced longtime successful coach Fred Stengel.
LaSalle, which had leads of 7-0 and 21-14, fell behind, 22-21, with 4:30 left in the game. It reached the Bergen 14-yard line – twice converting fourth-down plays – with 14 seconds left before Bostick’s victory-sealing sack and subsequent fumble.
Quarterback
Tanner McEvoy led the winners on both sides of the ball. He completed 9 of 17 passes for 124 yards and three touchdowns. He ran for the winning two-point conversion after firing a 20-yard scoring pass to
Spencer Kulcsar to draw within 21-20. He also had seven tackles and broke up two passes on defense.
McEvoy (6-foot-5, 200 pounds) moved to quarterback during the
offseason after starting two years at receiver and defensive back.
Kulscar had three catches for 66 yards and a pair of touchdowns, in addition to running five times for 74 yards. He also made six tackles and one interception.
Hunter Kiselick had seven tackles, two for losses.
