Even without recently re-classified big man
Nerlens Noel, high school basketball's Class of 2013 features some serious star power at the top.
The quintet of
Jabari Parker,
Aaron Gordon,
Julius Randle and twins
Andrew and
Aaron Harrison are the focus of much of the attention. There's more here than just great basketball bodies and loads of potential, however. Each of them is delivering in a big way
now and in the midst of legendary high school careers.
Parker, a 6-foot-8 small forward, has led
Simeon (Chicago) to Class 4A state titles in all three seasons with the program. The Wolverines went 33-1 this winter and finished No. 4 in MaxPreps.com's Xcellent 25 national rankings. He posted 19.5 points, 8.9 rebounds and 4.9 assists per game.
Gordon battled mononucleosis through much of his junior campaign but still managed to put up 22.4 points and 12.6 rebounds per game. The 6-8 forward helped
Archbishop Mitty (San Jose) capture back-to-back state titles in California and compile a record of 64-5 during the two-year span.
The Harrisons led
Fort Bend Travis (Richmond) to a 36-4 record in 2011-12 and an appearance in the Texas Class 5A state championship game. The Houston-area standouts have indicated they will continue their basketball careers together at the next level. Andrew is a point guard that can completely take over when called upon. Aaron has developed a reputation as a major scorer, leading the Tigers in that category this season at over 18 points per game and 44 in the state playoff opener.
Randle is an impressive combination of size (6-9, 240), athleticism and aggression at the power forward spot. He is coming off a state championship season at
Prestonwood Christian (Plano, Texas) and led the Lions to the tourney title while collecting MVP honors at the City of Palms Classic in December – an event widely regarded as the nation's top in-season event and talent showcase.
