Sterling (Kan.) and
Wisconsin Lutheran (Milwaukee, Wis.) enter the 2026-27 high school basketball season sharing the nation’s longest active win streak at 40 games. Both also have an opportunity to turn their run of success into state records this season.
In Kansas, Sterling needs 24 consecutive victories to break the state record of 63 established by
St. John's (Beloit) from 2012-15. Wisconsin Lutheran would need 30 more wins without a loss to move past
Germantown and its mark of 69 from 2011-14.
Among the teams pursuing state history,
Shaktoolik (Alaska) has the shortest distance to travel. With 27 consecutive victories, Shaktoolik needs 10 more to top the 36 in a row achieved by
Ninilchik from 2022-23.
Wheeling Central Catholic also could reach its state milestone relatively early. Another 14 consecutive victories would push its streak to 49, surpassing the West Virginia record shared by Charleston (1967-69) and Ansted (1958-59).
Several other schools would need an extended unbeaten run and enough games on their schedules to challenge their state standards.
Trinity Lutheran (Bend, Ore.),
Barr-Reeve (Montgomery, Ind.) and
Sheridan (Wyo.) each need 32 consecutive victories to establish a new record.
Rich (Randolph, Utah) needs 33 and
Highland (Albuquerque, N.M.) needs 34.
The national record remains out of reach for the foreseeable future.
Passaic (N.J.) won 159 consecutive games from 1919-25, a standard more than a century old that still towers over the country’s current streaks.
