A pair of Midwest distance runners set national records while winning their respective 5,000-meter races Friday during the New Balance Indoor Nationals at the Armory in New York City.
Sandburg (Orland Park, Ill.) star Lukas Verzbicas won the boys 5K in 14 minutes, 6.78 seconds to lower his own 2009 record by 12 seconds.
On the girls side, senior Waverly Neer of
Culver Academies (Culver, Ind.) finished strong to set a 5K record of 16:35.15. The previous record was 16:43.02, which was set in 2004 by Briana Jackucewicz of Colts Neck (N.J.).
