Teams are rested and school is back in session. With that, basketball games are set to resume and there is a slate of competitive girls hoops games across the state this month. All five classifications have great games to look forward to that will have major implications in both league standings and the playoff outlook.
Here are the top 10 girls basketball games in Colorado for the month of January as the 2021-22 CHSAA season continues.
Class 5A
Ralston Valley (Arvada) at Monarch (Louisville), Jan. 11, 6:30 p.m.
Monarch has jumped out to perhaps the most impressive start to the season of anyone in the state. The Coyotes rattled off eight straight wins to start the year and have averaged about 57 points per game in the process. They'll get their first big test of the season when they host Ralston Valley.
Amelia Rosin has been consistent throughout the year and averages a double-double with 11 points and 10.6 rebounds per game.
Natalie Guanella leads the team in scoring (18 PPG) and steals per game at 3.1.
The Mustangs are solid across the board offensively.
Saya Sabus leads the team with 16.9 points per game but
Sophia Sabus and
Finley Timon also average double-digit scoring figures. That should put the Mustangs squarely in the mix of the Jeffco League title hunt, but the game against Monarch will be a test to see where the teams stand in the upper echelon of the 5A field.
Valor Christian (Highlands Ranch) at Grandview (Aurora), Jan. 8, 7 p.m.A couple of the top players in the state will square off early in the month when defending state champion Valor Christian heads into Aurora to face Grandview. This was a showdown that many thought they'd see last year before the Wolves were stunned by Regis Jesuit in the 5A semifinals. This meeting could easily be a state semifinal or championship preview or later in the year.
Grandview still has the benefit of having
Lauren Betts on the roster. Betts isn't just the top standout player in the state, but she's rated as the top recruit in the country by ESPN. So far this season, she's averaging 12.3 points, 11.3 rebounds and five blocks per game.
After missing all of last season,
Raegan Beers has been dominant. She averages 20.7 points and 14.4 rebounds per game which is top five in the entire state. She missed out on playing for the state championship but would love to be the one to help the Eagles win back-to-back titles.
Class 4A
D'Evelyn (Denver, Colo.) at Green Mountain (Lakewood), Jan. 19, 5:30 p.m.The first of two showdowns between the top two teams in the Jeffco League will give one of these squads a clear edge in the league title race. Green Mountain went into the winter break undefeated while D'Evelyn suffered a loss to Monarch back on Dec. 10.
The Rams have looked solid all year and
Jayda Maves has been a big reason for that. She averages 21.2 points and 3.8 steals per game, both of which are team-highs.
Avery Oaster adds 15.6 points per game and also leads the team in rebounds (8.8) and blocks (2.2) per game.
The Jags have three players scoring in double figures in Bailey Marvel (19.1 PPG),
Macy Scheer (11.5) and
Maddie Topping (11.3). Marvel has been one of the best players in the state as she also grabs 16.8 rebounds per game and leads the team in steals per game at 5.3.
Holy Family (Broomfield) at Windsor, Jan. 25, 6 p.m.Both these teams lost to Mullen in the 2021 4A state basketball tournament, but those losses either came in the semifinals or the championship game and both teams look like they can make another championship run.
Olivia Reed averages a double-double with 13 points and 10.3 rebounds per game and fellow senior
Mykaela Moore scores 10.1 points per game. The team overall has been excellent on the glass as it pulls down 35 rebounds per game with 15 of them coming on the offensive side.
Holy Family has a trio of players that provides great production in multiple facets of the game.
Essynce Contreraz leads the team in points (13.4) and assists (4.8) per game.
Mariah Quintana scores 12. 6 points per game, has a team-high 2.6 steals per game and also dishes 4.4 assists per game.
Makenna Bertsch scores 11.6 points per game and leads the team with 9.7 rebounds per game.
Class 3A
Colorado Springs Christian at The Vanguard School (Colorado Springs), Jan. 5, 7 p.m.It's odd to think that a league championship game could be played in early January but with the way the Coursers and Lions have looked, the Tri-Peaks title could very well be on the line in this clash.
The Coursers dropped their first two games of the season but played well heading into the winter break.
Juliana Garcia has emerged as a standout player as she averages 15 points and 8.5 rebounds per game and gets plenty of help from
Hailey Blanchard who scores 9.8 points and grabs 2.3 steals per game.
The Lions have a solid one-two punch offensively as
Grace Minihane leads the team with 14 points per game and
Elleah Hoekert is right there with her at 13. The team is solid defensively as they record 17.7 steals per game and hold its opponents to 28.6 points per game.
Resurrection Christian (Loveland) at Eaton, Jan. 14, 7 p.m.Both the Cougars and the Reds had the misfortune of running into teams that advanced to last year's state championship team. They're both looking to rebound and establish themselves as top-flight teams in the classification and will eventually test themselves against defending champion Platte Valley.
This will be a crucial season for Resurrection Christian as underclassmen are establishing themselves as premiere players on the roster. Sophomore
Mackenzie Flikkema leads the team with 13.4 points per game and freshman
Olivia Klein has 9.9. If these young players can learn to win a big game against Eaton, they can be very dangerous come tournament time.
Ahana Leffler leads Eaton in both points (16), assists (4.3) and steals (2.7) per game.
Leyah Scott scores 10.5 points per game giving Eaton a dynamic scoring front that should keep it in the hunt for the Patriot League title.
Class 2A
Holyoke at Limon, Jan. 22, 4:30 p.m.Last year's No. 1 seed in the state playoffs against the defending state champion should make for an entertaining clash. The Badgers have dropped one game this season and that came on Dec. 17 against Eaton. The Dragons also suffered a loss before the winter break as they fell to Sedgwick County 51-49 on Dec. 9. Both teams are looking to get a big momentum boost from a win in this game.
The Badgers have a potential player of the year candidate in
Trista Marx who averages 17.6 points and 7.6 rebounds per game. She's the only player average double-digit scoring figures but
Jentri Marx scores 9.4 points per game and
Jordyn Tacha adds 7.6.
For the Dragons,
Lauren Herman averages a double-double a game with 12.8 points and 11.8 rebounds.
Kristin Vieselmeyer leads the team in scoring with 18.5 points per game and nearly matches Herman's double-double output by grabbing 9.7 rebounds per game.
Yuma at Wray, Jan. 21, 4 p.m.This will be a huge clash that could setup one of these two teams for a Lower Platte League title.
Wray won the first (non-league) showdown 63-49 behind a solid performance from
Karly Godsey in which she scored 23 points. She's averaging 17.7 points per game on the year and is the only player to average double figures.
Larissa Salmans scores 9.5 points per game and pulls down 7.2 rebounds.
Yuma relies on a team effort when it comes to offense as
Lea Richardson,
Caddis Robinson and
Meidi Reyes each average at least 8.8 points per game. Richardson and Robinson combined to score 21 points in the loss to Wray on Dec. 4 and will need to be more productive to ensure a win in the league game.
Class 1AStratton at Briggsdale, Jan. 8, 2 p.m.Both teams got off to a fast start to the year and went into the winter break with undefeated records. The Falcons are coming off a state semifinals appearance and are playing like a team that is determined to capture the 1A championship. The Eagles did not make the 1A state tournament but a 3-0 start to the season is giving them hope that they'll crack the playoff field. A win over Briggsdale would be a huge stepping stone to that goal.
The Falcons are led by
Kylie and
Jenna Krise who average 21.8 and 13.2 points per game, respectively. Kylie also shares the team lead in rebounds per game at 5.8 along with Kayl Klem.
Sedonia Isenbart leads the Eagles with 23.7 points per game and is also the team leader in assists (4.7) and steals (10.3) per game.
Lone Star (Otis) at Fleming, Jan. 13, 4 p.m.The first leg of a back-to-back for Fleming, the Wildcats are looking to cement their status as a top team in 1A. They reached the state title game last season before falling to Flatirons Academy and this season they want to walk away with the state crown.
Lone Star was on the verge of a major upset in the state tournament when it lost to Kit Carson by just two points. The two losses for the Longhorns have come against top-five teams in Briggsdale and Merino.
Whitney Chintala sets the tone on both ends of the floor for Fleming as she averages 15 points, 3.8 assists and 4.2 steals per game.
Kally Kirkwood adds 13.2 points per game and
Madison Harms leads the team with 6.4 rebounds per game.
The Longhorns ride some senior leadership as
Alivia Weathers scores 18.2 points per game and
Alison Davis adds 11.2 to go with a team-high 6.6 rebounds.
