For the first time in more than a decade, Yorktown (Ind.) emerged as a winner in a match against the Muncie Burris Owls.
Muncie Burris has been one of the most dominant teams in Indiana over the past 15 years, winning 14 straight state championships and winning 99 straight matches before falling to Assumption (Louisville, Ky.) earlier this season.
Yorktown is no slouch, however. Despite the long losing streak to the Owls, which dates back to the 2000 season, Yorktown has been one of the top programs in the Hoosier state and was ranked No. 1 in the 3A Division (Muncie Burris is 2A) heading into last week's match.
Muncie Burris won the first game, but Yorktown won the final three to claim the match. The victory moves the Tigers into the MaxPreps Xcellent 25 National Volleyball Rankings presented by the Army National Guard this week at No. 23, while dropping the Owls to No. 24.
Also moving into the Xcellent 25 this week are Westlake (Austin, Texas), which was erroneously credited with a loss to Del Valle last week, and Fontainebleau (Mandeville, La.), which ran its win streak to 32 straight victories.
Marymount (Los Angeles) and St. Francis (Mountain View, Calif.), which both suffered losses at the California Challenge in Torrey Pines, dropped out of the Xcellent 25 along with York (Elmhurst, Ill.), which lost a dual match with Marist (Chicago).
