Player of the Year: Lexi Sun, Santa Fe Christian (Solana Beach, Calif.), 6-3 Sr.Due to her heavy club and international seasons representing various USA teams, Sun opted not to play high school volleyball in 2015 and Santa Fe Christian High School won just 14 of 33 matches without her.
But in 2016, after spending the summer playing for team USA, Sun returned to her high school team and led it to a 32-8 season that included the San Diego Section title and a berth in the state's Open Division final four.

The outside hitter averaged 5.9 kills per set with a 55.5 percent kill percentage for her 630 kills. She added 60 blocks and 45 aces, 288 digs (2.7 average), chipped in 40 assists and returned 447 serves for a set average of 4.2. She finished her three-year prep career with 1,360 kills and 687 digs.
For her efforts, Sun has been named MaxPreps 2016 National Volleyball Player of the Year.
Sun has been a member of the 2016 U.S. Women's Junior National Team, the 2014 U16 Team USA and a member of the USA Beach U17 National Team that won gold at the FIVB World Championships in Acapulco, Mexico.
Santa Fe Christian coach Amanda Miles said "Lexi is one of a kind."
"I have only known Lexi for one year. I can promise she will be one of the most memorable athletes from my career. She will leave an impression on me that far exceeds the physical accomplishments on the court. Lexi is as good as it gets," said coach Miles.
Sun played her best in big playoff matches – 31 kills in 3-0 sweep over Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.), 28 in a 3-0 sweep over Cathedral Catholic and 28 in a 3-0 season-ending loss to Santa Margarita. She averaged better than 8.2 kills per set in the postseason. There were at least a half-dozen lopsided wins during the season when Sun played little and took no more than a dozen kill shots in a match. Her season's average was 28.
Santa Fe Christian Athletic Director Chad Bickley said, "Sun is the best volleyball player (he has seen)."
"From the Nike Tournament in Phoenix, where the top teams and talent in country played, to the San Diego CIF to state CIF, I have not seen a better player then Lexi," said Bickley. "But the importance to our team went way beyond her talent level. Her leadership was the best I have ever seen from an athlete of her talent. Her talent was obvious, but combined with her leadership has made her the best athlete that I have seen in their particular sport."
Sun, who has signed with Texas, is ranked by most recruiting or volleyball organizations as the No. 1 high school volleyball player in the country. She was a MaxPreps Freshman All-American in 2013 and a member of the MaxPreps 2014 Sophomore All-American Team.
"To say Lexi is special would be an understatement," said Miles. "The way that she commands the court, walks through the halls, and lights up a room is truly unique. She has a way of connecting with each member of the team and prides herself on all relationships she has on and off the court at Santa Fe Christian. Lexi has attended SFC since kindergarten and I would challenge anyone to find an individual with more pride for her school. She embodies what it means to be a Christian athlete."
Coach of the Year: Andrew Solomon, Penfield (N.Y.)Solomon guided the Patriots to a 50-0 record, which included a 120-3 set mark, and a Class AA state title. The team also won tournament championships at the Penfield, Baldwinsville, Garden State and Horseheads tournaments.

The Patriots lost one set each in September, October and November. They lost just one set in the postseason – in the state-title match victory over 29-4 Connequot (20-25, 27-25, 25-12 and 25-20).
"It was a magical season," said Solomon. "It was a once-in-a-career team."
Solomon praised his team's seniors, noting that five started as sophomores when Penfield reached the state finals, only to lose.
"We had the same kids, but they were more developed and determined," said Solomon, who said he had "chills" when told he was MaxPreps' 2016 National Coach of the Year.
The champions' roster included seven seniors –
Lauren Ewell,
Johanna Gregory (signed with Gannon University),
Emily Harnischfeger,
Lindsay Hernady,
Megan Palmiter,
Jamie Rogers and MaxPreps All-American
Alea Steigerwald, who has signed with Fairfield University.
Steigerwald and Gregory were named first team All-State, while Harnischfeger was named second team All-State.
"Everything has to go just right to win state and to go 50-0," said Solomon. "No injuries and a lot of determination. These girls were down 19-10 in the state semifinals and went on a 15-point run to win. They set a goal to dominate and they did."
Solomon noted his team was 15 players deep and every single player saw action in the state tournament.
"Our 15th girl was very good," he said. "You don't win that many and lose so few without being deep."
The Patriots picked the lion for their inspirational theme in 2016.
"Lions are a pride, king of the jungle. And our girls wanted to be king of New York," said Solomon, who noted that adding to his "very special" season was that his son Jordan was the starting setter on the boys Penfield varsity that also won the state large schools championship.
Athletic Director Peter Shambo said that the program's success is based upon Solomon's dedication to his players.
"He has a great understanding of the value of his athletes as people first and the investments he makes in them as individuals in a team setting is second to none," said Shambo.
Solomon, who has been head coach of the Patriots since 2006, has a 256-42-16 won-loss-tied mark.
