Booker T. Washington Rides Bennett to Glory
When Tulsa Washington dropped down to Class 5A after spending two years in the rigors of Oklahoma Class 6A football with the likes of Tulsa Union and Jenks, you had to believe the Hornets would make a serious push for its first state title since 1984.
On Saturday in Broken Arrow, Booker T. Washington ended the season in the same fashion it started – with an emphatic victory over perennial 5A power Carl Albert. On this occasion, the Hornets capped off the season with a 28-17 victory over Titans to win the Class 5A state championship.
Junior quarterback Eric Bennett was the story in 2008 for the Hornets. Bennett, who opened the season in a 40-7 pounding of Carl Albert by totaling 403 yards of offense and throwing for four touchdown passes, finished the job in the final by rushing for 206 yards and four touchdowns for the Hornets.
Bennett ran for just eight yards in the first quarter while Carl Albert star David Oku ceased early control. Oku rushed for 88 yards on a 98-yard drive and capped it off with a 10-yard touchdown run to give the Titans an early 7-0 lead in the first quarter.
Bennett would get the Hornets on the scoreboard with a 1-yard touchdown run in the second quarter to tie the game at seven, which would be the tally at intermission.
In the second half, it was a combination of Bennett and a stingy Tulsa Washington defense that ruled the day. Bennett logged 10 carries on a 16-play drive to open the second half broke the tie on a 3-yard touchdown run on 4th-and-2 with 4:06 left in the third quarter.
From there, the defense made an impression by holding Oku to four yards in the second half after letting the Tennessee commit loose for 128 yards and a touchdown in the first half.

Glenpool Gets Its Revenge, Gold Ball
In order to win two-straight state championships, Bishop McGuinness got the fight of its life in the Class 4A state title game in 2007 by getting past Glenpool, 14-9. Glenpool got the upper-hand this season, turning away the two-time defending champions 27-17 to win its second gold ball in school history.
Trailing 10-6 at halftime, junior running back Marco Nelson took control. Nelson rushed for 151 yards and three touchdowns in the second half to finish with a career-high 245 yards. Nelson, who missed a good part of the season due to an injury, finished the season with 1,437 yards and 18 touchdowns for the state champions.
Glenpool struck first blood with a 1-yard touchdown run from Alex Rice in the second quarter. McGuinness quarterback Ryan Randolph fired back, striking Larone Richardson on a 16-yard touchdown pass to put the Fighting Irish in the lead. Before halftime, Kyle Thomas booted a 27-yard field goal to extend McGuinness’ lead to 10-6.
From there, it was all Nelson. Nelson scored on touchdown runs of 3, 15, and 82 yards in the second half to help the Warriors build a 27-10 lead. McGuinness managed to get on the board once more with a Randolph touchdown pass to Gabe Ikard from 15 yards out, but it was not enough.
Glenpool allowed just 50 points in its 14 games this season, finishing with an unblemished 14-0 mark. McGuinness finished 11-3 and lost its first games since the 2005 season. Over the past three seasons, the Fighting Irish went 39-3.
