Video: Top 10 Texas football players heading into the 2019 season
Watch three dynamic dual-threat quarterbacks.
Earl Campbell, Eric Dickerson and Thurman Thomas.
Besides being great running backs, the trio share another distinction: All played high school football in Texas.
All three were also among the MaxPreps Top 25 greatest high school football players list we put together in 2015.
Here are the current 10 best Texas players regardless of class heading into the 2019 season.
10. Tommy Brockermeyer — All Saints (Fort Worth)The 6-foot-6, 283-pound offensive tackle is ranked the No. 4 junior overall in the country, according to 247Sports. Brockermeyer has 21 college offers and it figures to come down to Alabama, Michigan and Texas.
247Sports evaluation: Big-framed offensive tackle with outstanding football pedigree. Plays with active feet and encouraging leg drive. Plays with a high motor and displays block-finishing ability. Gets to the second level well. Owns a very high ceiling as a pass-blocker and true left tackle potential.
9. Chris Thompson Jr. — DuncanvilleThe
6-2, 195-pound senior safety led Duncanville into the state 6A Division 1 title
game last year. He's earned 36 college offers, but appears sold on
Texas, Auburn, USC or Ohio State.
247Sports evaluation:
Physical defender with elite frame potential for projected position.
Great height and length with ample space to continue to add bulk. Huge
hitter who can separate the ball from the runner. Provides
highlight-reel pops in the open field. Flashes impressive straight-line
closing speed. Enforcer in the run game when crashing downhill into the
box.
8. Shadrach Banks — North Shore (Houston) The
No. 83 recruit from the Class of 2021 is a big reason North Shore won a
MaxPreps national championship last season, with 60 catches for 1,300
yards and 17 touchdowns. The 6-foot, 207-pound wide receiver has 31 offers, but
Texas A&M, LSU and Oklahoma are among his favorites.
247Sports evaluation:
Thick-framed receiver who could play multiple positions at the Power 5
level in college. Built like a running back and often runs that way
after the catch. Provided outstanding production as a sophomore for a
state title team in Texas' largest classification. Big-play machine.
Shows good awareness and feel for the game. Strong runner who regularly
gains yardage after contact. Strong in the air and shows ability to take
the ball away from defenders.
7. Hudson Card — Lake Travis (Austin)The
6-3, 185-pound senior quarterback is ranked the No. 2 dual threat
quarterback in the country for good reason. He completed nearly 68
percent of his passes for 3,543 yards and 50 touchdowns against four
interceptions last season. He also rushed for 619 yards and nine more
scores for the 13-2 Cavaliers. The Texas commit has 23 college offers,
including Alabama, Baylor, Michigan, Ohio State and Oregon, but he
appears to be fully committed to stay at home.
247Sports evaluation: Spent
his sophomore year at wide receiver as he plays for arguably the top
quarterback-producing high school program in the nation ... One of the
better athletes among quarterbacks in the 2020 cycle with above average
long speed and very good quickness and short area explosion ... Flashes
creativity and the ability to make plays both from in and outside of
structure. An accurate passer from within the pocket ... Shows nice
touch and ball location on downfield throws ... Uses his athleticism to
escape the rush and make off-platform throws and pick up big chunks on
the ground.

Lake Travis quarterback Hudson Card accounted for more than 4,100 yards and 59 touchdowns in 2018.

6. Dematrius Davis Jr. — North Shore (Houston)The
quick 5-11, 190-pound incoming junior quarterback was the 2018 MaxPreps National
Sophomore of the Year, leading the 16-0 Mustangs to a national
championship. Davis made all the right reads when it counted most,
including a 45-yard Hail Mary touchdown pass on the last play of the
game in a 41-36 victory over Duncanville for the 6A Division 1 state title. Davis
threw for 3,350 yards and 43 touchdowns against two interceptions in
2018 and rushed for 421 more. He has 22 college offers, but Florida
State, Nebraska and Texas A&M appear his leading candidates.
247Sports evaluation:
Watch Davis' film and you can see he possesses similar height (listed
at 5-11) and some of the same traits that drew (Nebraska) to McKenzie
Milton when they were at Central Florida — except Davis has more to his
build at this point in his career.
5. Jase McClellan, AledoThe
5-11, 190-pound senior running back already has a whopping 674 career carries for
5,200 yards and 95 touchdowns. Ranked No. 23 nationally regardless of
position, McClellan has 22 offers, but already committed to Oklahoma.
He's run 10.90 in the 100 meters and 4.55 in the 40.
247Sports evaluation:
"Enormous production for Texas Class 5A D 2 power. High-volume back
who can carry the load. Light-footed in the hole with impressive initial
burst. Unique in his ability as a smooth runner who also finishes runs
with strength. Dangerous one-cut slasher. Also possesses balance and
strength to maximize yards after contact. Runs with good balance and
leverage."
4. Demond Demas— TomballThe
bouncy 6-3, 187-pound incoming senior has a staggering 57 college
offers — one of the largest totals in the prep game today — though he's
committed to Texas A&M. Beyond his height, he also possesses a
41-inch vertical leap to go along with 4.43-second speed in the 40-yard
dash. He had 50 catches for 1,574 yards and 23 touchdowns last season.
247Sports evaluation:
Big-framed wideout with dynamic athletic traits. Outstanding size that
is transferable to the next level. Possesses a terrific frame that could
hold more bulk — if desired. Go-get-it wideout who can win balls over
most defensive backs. Should be a red-zone terror at the next level.
3. Drew Sanders — Ryan (Denton)The
6-5, 232-pound senior is ranked the No. 1 all-around athlete in the
country for the Class of 2020, though he's slated to be an immediate
impactful linebacker at Alabama starting in 2020. Sanders has been a
passer, rusher and receiver for Ryan, but his real impact has been
leading a defense with 141 career tackles, eight sacks and three
interceptions. Once he focuses on just one side of the ball, watch out.
247Sports evaluation: Big-framed jumbo athlete who could play high-major football on either side of the line of scrimmage in multiple spots.
The
6-2, 219-pound senior quarterback did it all last season for the 15-1
Panthers, accounting for 3,077 yards and 38 touchdowns. He was deemed
virtually unstoppable in the team's season-ending, state-championship
41-36 loss to North Shore Ranked the 55th top recruit in the country,
Jackson has 26 offers but is committed to the University of Texas.
247Sports evaluation: Powerfully
built, athletic, rocked up athlete ... High school quarterback that is
good enough to play quarterback effectively in college ... Athletic
traits offer more upside at other positions, most notably on defense as a
safety or linebacker ... Usually looks like the best player on the
field in Texas' highest classification."
1. Zachary Evans, North Shore (Houston)The
5-11, 200-pounder is ranked the No. 1 senior running back in the
country after leading the Mustangs (16-0) to the Class 6A-Division 1
state championship and national championship last year. Blessed with
superior speed (4.51 in the 40) and athleticism (37-inch vertical leap),
Evans also shows great power, balance and vision. He's racked up 44
college offers, but appears to be leaning toward either Alabama,
Georgia, LSU, Ohio State or Oklahoma.
247Sports evaluation:
"Dynamic athletic running back with prototype size. ... Flashes elite
athleticism. ... Makes it look easy, sometimes to the point that it's
deceptive. Effortlessly strings moves together in the open field to
elude multiple defenders. Chameleon in ability to alter running styles,
going from elusive darter to hole-punching, straight-line galloper. Home
run hitter with high-volume capability."

North Shore senior running back Zachary Evans has a shot at being Texas' next great running back at the next two levels.
