Wayne Davis, a recent graduate of South Raleigh (Raleigh, N.C.), set a world junior record by winning the 110-meter hurdles in a blazing 13.08 seconds during the Pan American Junior Championships in Port of Spain, Trinidad. It also was a record for 39-inch hurdles.
Davis, who ran an outstanding 13.19 qualifying heat, erased the world junior record of 13.12 set in 2002 by future Olympic gold medalist Liu Xiang. He also bested the USA junior record of 13.30 by Chris Nelloms in 1990.
Mason Finley, a recent graduate of Buena Vista (Colo.), set two USA records with Junior Weight implements by winning the shot put (66-09.75) and discus (214-04).
Chalonda Goodman, a recent graduate of Newnan (Ga.), doubled by winning the 100-meter dash in a USA-No. 1 time for 2009 (11.2 seconds) and the 200-meter dash (23.08).

Reynolds, Love “triple”
Robin Reynolds and Bryce Love each won three events during the USA Track & Field Junior Olympics in Greensboro, N.C.
Reynolds, who will be a sophomore at Jackson (Miami, Fla.), already is a legend, having won four events as a freshman in Florida’s Class 3A state meet.
Last week she won the intermediate girls 400-meter run in 52.15 seconds, just missing the national record by .04 seconds. She also captured first in the long jump (19-6.25) and 200-meter dash (23.84).
Love, competing for Carolina Elite, won the midget boys 400-meter dash in a meet-record 50.75 seconds. He also set a national youth record in the 200-meter dash (23.38) and won the 100 in 11.79.
Legendary Walter retires
Maryland’s winningest public school baseball coach, Bernie Walter, has retired at age 66. The Gambrills Arundel coach compiled a 36-year record of 609-185 and won a record 10 state championships.
Walter, who also was athletic director for 27 years, was named National Coach of the Year three times and was inducted into the American Baseball Coaches Association Hall of Fame in 2007. In 1988 he coached the USA Baseball Junior National Team to a gold medal.
Hardebeck, Sock win titles
Jack Sock (Overland Park, Kan.) defeated Sekou Bangoura (Bradenton, Fla.), 6-3, 6-2, to win the boys 18 division during the prestigious U.S. Tennis Association Clay Court National Championships in Delray Beach, Fla.
He also teamed with Frederick Saba (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) to win the doubles crown with a 6-2, 7-6 victory over Zachary Leslie (San Diego, Calif.) and Anderson Reed (Daphne, Ala.).
Fourteen-year-old Krista Hardebeck won the girls 18 division with a 6-2, 6-3 triumph over Gabriella De Simone (San Diego, Calif.) in Memphis, Tenn. The rising sophomore from Santa Ana, Calif., was unseeded and playing in only her second clay court tourney.
Beisel wins 2 medals
North Kingstown (R.I.) rising senior Elizabeth Beisel won her first two medals as a member of the USA swim team.
The 16-year-old Olympian placed third in the 200-meter backstroke with a personal-best time of 2:06.39 during the FINA World Championships in Rome, Italy. She also placed fifth in the 400-meter individual medley in 4:34.90.
USA wins gold medal
The USA women handed Spain its first loss, 87-71, to win the FIBA Under-19 World Championship basketball tournament in Bangkok, Thailand. It was a record fourth gold medal for the Americans.
Nneka Ogwumike led the way with 22 points and 20 rebounds as the Americans (8-1) avenged their only loss. Samantha Prahalis had 21 points and Kelsey Bone 18. MaxPreps National Player of the Year Skylar Diggins (headed for Notre Dame) celebrated her 19th birthday with 10 points and seven rebounds.
Cal Swish Black wins title
Cal Swish Black defeated powerhouse Boo Williams, 48-40, to win the Gold Division during the Nike Nationals girls basketball tournament in North Augusta, S.C. Earlier this summer, the Orange County, Calif., team had won Oregon’s End of the Trail and the Music City Classic in Tennessee.
The Swish dominated the boards, 34-13, and held one of the nation’s top juniors, Elizabeth Williams, to four points and three rebounds.
Lindsay Sherbert led the champs with 14 points and nine rebounds. Bonnie Samuelson added 12 points.
Tubert wins golf crown
Burroughs (Burbank, Calif.) senior EmilyTubert shot 1-under-par 212 to win the 32nd annual girls Junior American Cup golf tourney in Logan, Utah. Her effort also helped Southern California capture the team title with a 54-hole score of 646.
Hannah Suh (San Jose, Calif.) carried a four-shot lead into the final day, but bogeyed five of the final seven holes and had to settle for a second-place tie with Northern California teammate Mariko Tumangan at 214.
Football notes
Robert Crisp, a 6-foot-7, 300-pound offensive tackle from Cedar Ridge (Hillsborough, N.C.), was named MVP at the FBU Top Gun Camp in Paisley, Fla. He is committed to North Carolina State.
Connecticut standouts won both the offensive and defensive awards. Silas Redd, a 5-10, 187-pound running back from Stamford King & Low Heywood Thomas, earned offensive honors. He is committed to Penn State. Defensive honors went to Khairi Fortt, a 6-3, 225-pound defensive back from Stamford.
* Telvin Smith has chosen Florida State University. The 6-4, 198-pound linebacker made 97 tackles (16 for losses) and two interceptions last year at Lowndes (Valdosta, Ga.).
* Mascoutah (Ill.) wide receiver Matt Milton plans to attend the University of Tennessee. As a junior the 6-5, 200-pounder made 40 catches for 797 yards and nine touchdowns.
