Findlay Prep (Henderson, Nev.) swingman Amir Garrett signed a letter of intent Wednesday with St. John's.
The 6-foot-6 Garrett is ranked No. 95 on MaxPreps' list of Top 100 players for the Class of 2011. He chose the Red Storm over Oregon, Arizona, Boston College and Virgina Tech, among others.
"It was just a good fit for me," Garrett told Nevadapreps.com. "Coach (Steve) Lavin is trying to bring the program around, and I'm a person who can help."
Garrett played at Sierra Vista (Las Vegas) as a sophomore before transferring to Leuzinger (Lawndale, Calif.). As a junior, the left-hander averaged 16.8 points, 7.2 rebounds, 1.6 assists and 1.6 steals per game and was named California Interscholastic Federation-Southern Section Division I-A Co-Player of the Year after leading Leuzinger to the Division I-A section championship.
"Amir Garrett is a special talent. His length, explosiveness, quickness, and highly-skilled game make him an ideal fit for our system of play," St. John's coach Steve Lavin said in a news release announcing the Red Storm's recruiting class. "Amir was clearly the most tenacious prospect that we evaluated in the 2011 recruiting class and his highly competitive nature will be critical as we build our program."
