After playing in various December tournaments and taking a break for the holidays, Oregon's top basketball squads begin league play in most cases this week.
Top-ranked South Medford (9-1), who knocked off previous No. 1 Lake Oswego in the prestigious Les Schwab Invitational in late December, gets an early Southwest Conference test Tuesday against 10th-ranked Sheldon (7-4).
Nobody from Oregon has beaten South Medford yet this season. The Panthers' sole loss was a 99-90 shootout with powerful Oak Hill Academy in the aforementioned Les Schwab Invitational championship.
No. 2 Lake Oswego will have a non-league encounter at Redmond on Tuesday.
In the 5A ranks, No. 1 North Eugene begins Midwestern League play Thursday with a home contest against Thurston of Eugene. Second-rated Corvallis starts Mid Willamette Conference action Thursday at home versus Woodburn.
