Mater Dei (Santa Ana, Calif.) snapped JSerra Catholic (San Juan Capistrano, Calif.)'s 5-game winning streak, with a 42-10 victory on Saturday.
After taking the lead on a punt return touchdown by
London Iakopo in the first quarter, the Monarchs led 21-0 at the half.
Both teams scored seven points in the third quarter, so the margin remained at 21 entering the fourth.
Mater Dei's standout player in the win was Team. He ran for two touchdowns and kicked six extra points.
Nick Robinson played well for the Lions. The sophomore quarterback threw one touchdown.
JSerra Catholic's lone touchdown came on an 80-yard pass from Robinson to Dante Pettis in the third quarter.
JC came in surrendering 17.0 points per game this season. The San Juan Capistrano school struggled against MD's offense, which entered the game scoring 34.2 points per game. The Santa Ana school had given up an average of 11.0 points prior to the contest.
Last season's game between the teams resulted in a 42-19 win for the Monarchs.
The win was a nice bounce back for Mater Dei, which lost to Narbonne last week, 18-17. The defeat comes as a step back for JSerra Catholic, which notched a 31-21 victory over Trabuco Hills in its previous outing.
In a Trinity game next week Mater Dei (5-1) takes on Santa Margarita, and JSerra Catholic (5-1) will go up against St. John Bosco also in a Trinity game.
