With 10 trips to the Nebraska high school baseball earned between them, including five state titles won, Omaha Creighton Prep and Millard South have pretty much taken over the landscape in the Cornhusker State over the last 11 years.
The Junior Jays, winners of Class A state titles in 2012 and 2016-18, have come up the big winners in this week's Top 10 after making five trips to the finals since 2011 and compiling a 229-84 (.732) record over that period. The Junior Jays landed in every MaxPreps Top 25 Nebraska computer ranking, finishing first three times in the last 11 years.
Having won its first state baseball title since 1980, a year ago, Millard South moved into the No. 2 slot in this week's Top 10. The Patriots (256-83, .755) claim the runner-up spot after trailing Creighton Prep by 38 points. Like the Junior Jays, Millard South did land in MaxPreps' Top 10 in nine of the 10 seasons accounted for in this week's Top 10. Nebraska did not play baseball in 2020 due to COVID-19.
Millard West and Omaha Westside sit in the No. 3 and 4 spots respectively this week, while Norris rounds out the Top Five. The Wildcats and Warriors have each played in four Class A baseball finals since 2011 with Millard West claiming a state championship and Omaha Westside taking home the champion's hardware three times. The Titans, meanwhile, made six trips to the finals and claimed one state championship during its 11-year run.
MaxPreps has developed its own system in determining which baseball programs compete at the highest level over an extended period of time. Here is how the points for this week's Top 10 were accumulated:
1. 20 points for a state title
2. 10 points for finishing as a state runner-up
3. Other points are based on a team's Top 25 standing in the final MaxPreps Nebraska Computer Rankings presented by the Army National Guard. For instance, if a school claimed the top spot, it receives 25 points, while a No. 25 ranking is good for one point.
