Just a day after hearing that Rockhurst’s (Mo.) unscored-upon streak stood at an intimidating 23 games, the St. Thomas Aquinas boys soccer team went out and ruined it with a 3-2 triumph in front of a large crowd at the Top Dawg tournament held at the Blue Valley District Activities Center last week.
Rockhurst took a 1-0 advantage before Aquinas’ Thomas Schermoly rained on the Hawklets parade by scoring on his own rebound after he headed the ball off of the Rockhurst post. The junior forward then gave the Saints the lead with a second straight goal.
“We found out (about the streak) yesterday,” Schermoly told the Kansas City Star. “It just really encouraged us to work harder.”
Jordan Zarse booted the game-clincher in the second half for the Saints, who snapped a 32-game winning streak by the Hawklets.
Ark Valley-Chisholm Trail League ready to increase membership
The state’s largest league is about to get bigger. With the addition of three new schools over the next two years, the four-division league will increase from 24 schools to 26 in time for the 2011-12 school year. When all is said and done, the two biggest divisions of the league will play home to seven schools each, while the two smallest divisions will include six schools apiece.
Despite opening its doors this fall, Maize South won’t compete against a league schedule until 2011-12, as will Goddard Eisenhower, which opens in the fall of 2011. Wichita Collegiate was placed in the AV-CTL by the Kansas State High School Activities Association and begins conference competition in 2010.
Goddard Eisenhower will be placed in Division II once its doors open. Maize South and Wichita Collegiate will compete in Division IV. Kingman will drop out of Division IV next fall to begin competition in the newly formed Central Kansas League. Campus and Newton will move up to Division I, the league's big-school division, while Goddard drops into the Division II ranks. Winfield drops one division to Division III. Andover and Andover Central will make the move from Division III to Division II, while Rose Hill moves up a notch to Division III.
Goessel runners medal in sportsmanship
Flinthills cross country runner Sarah Dains was among the race leaders at the Canton-Galva Invitational last week when she suffered a severe asthma attack. Fortunately, help was around the corner. Goessel runners Brittny Czarnowsky and Kristen Hoffman, as well as Dain’s teammate Angela Merwin put aside any individual achievements they envisioned for the day, and stopped to help Dains, who had collapsed and was found unconscious, according to the Wichita Eagle.
Czarnowsky raced back to the starting line to inform meet officials and emergency medical assistance soon arrived. Czarnowsky finished the race in 24 minutes, 36 seconds. Dains, Hoffman and Merwin arrived at the finish line some time later.
“I think during any meet that it’s more important for the people to be safe and everybody doing well than to just place,” Hoffman told the Wichita Eagle. “You can place at any meet. But to make sure everybody is healthy is entirely different. That’s the priority.”
