The top seven teams in this week's MaxPreps Texas Top 25 can take a breath and relax with well-earned open dates this week.
No. 1 DeSoto is already off to a 2-0 in District 7-5A after Friday's 50-0 domination of South Grand Prairie.
Allen, ranked a close No. 2, was a convincing 31-10 winner over Coppell to wrap up a very difficult non-district schedule that also included No. 8 Carroll (Southlake) and No. 13 Cedar Hill.
DeSoto and Allen are also ranked No. 2 and No. 3, respectively in this week's
MaxPreps Xcellent 25 national rankings.
No. 3 Katy is 2-0 in District 19-5A following a solid 28-3 victory over Morton Ranch (Katy).

MaxPreps Texas Top 25 Football Rankings
1. DeSoto 5-0 (Last week 1)
The Eagles celebrated their promotion to the top spot with 50-0 domination of 2-3 South Grand Prairie, out-gaining the Warriors 652-97.
Desmon White had another big game for the Eagles, throwing for 357 yards and three touchdowns and rushing for 133 yards and two scores. After an open date, the Eagles will host 5-0 Mansfield Timberview (Arlington) on Oct. 11 in a battle for the District 7-5A lead.
2. Allen 5-0 (2)

In a non-district battle of unbeatens, the Eagles stunned Coppell's proud defense for 17 first-quarter points in a 31-10 victory over the 3-1 Cowboys.
Kyler Murray threw for 212 yards and rushed for 49 more as Allen avenged its only 2012 loss. After an open date, the Eagles take a 16-game winning streak into a District 10-5A opener against 4-1 Plano East (Plano) on Oct. 11.
3. Katy 5-0 (3)
For the fourth game this season the Tigers didn't allow a touchdown, limiting 3-1 Morton Ranch (Katy) to 149 yards and six first downs in a 28-3 District 19-5A victory.
Kyle Porter led the offense with 164 rushing yards and three touchdowns while
Kiley Huddleston threw for 145 yards and a score. After an open date, the Tigers face 1-3 Katy Taylor (Katy) on Oct. 11.
4. Westfield (Houston) 5-0 (6)
A 97-yard kickoff return for a touchdown by
Tevin Lewis triggered a 28-point second-half explosion that carried the Mustangs to a 41-7 victory over 3-1 Atascocita (Humble). Westfield led only 13-7 before Lewis' return.
Latevius Downs rushed for 189 on 23 carries to lead the Westfield attack. After an open date, the Mustangs attempt to improve to 4-0 in District 13-5A when they meet 2-3 Spring on Oct. 11.
5. North Shore (Houston) 5-0 (7)
The Mustangs unleashed a rushing attack that produced 386 yards and clobbered previously-unbeaten Channelview (4-1) 59-0.
Justin Green punched in three short touchdown runs,
Kevian DeLeon scored twice and
Lawance McCardell ran for one score and threw for another in a District 21-5A opener. After an open date, the Mustangs travel to face 3-1 Port Arthur Memorial on Oct. 11.
6. Lamar (Houston) 4-0 (5)
The Redskins went to work early, scoring 41 points in the opening quarter of a 55-0 rout over 1-4 Westbury (Houston). All four pass completions by senior quarterback
Darrell Colbert went for touchdowns and
Levy Whiteing added 102 rushing yards and a score in Lamar‘s District 20-5A opener. After an open date, the Redskins face 4-1 Westside (Houston) on Oct. 11.
7. Coppell 3-1 (4)
Running backs
Gavin McDaniel and
Charles West went over the 100-yard barrier, but the Cowboys had a tough time turning yards into points in a 31-10 loss to 5-0 Allen. Coppell's defense played well against the run, but had a difficult time slowing down the Eagles' passing game. After an open date, the Cowboys begin District 5-5A play by hosting 3-2 Hebron on Oct. 11.
8. Carroll (Southlake) 3-1 (8)
The District 4-5A opener went very well for the Dragons, a 59-3 victor over 1-3 Keller Central (Keller).
Ryan Agnew rushed for 106 yards and four touchdowns and threw for 219 yards and two more scores. The Dragons defense forced nine punts, a turnover and limited the Chargers to 150 yards. On Thursday, Carroll plays the first of three straight road games against 1-3 Timber Creek (Keller).
9. Steele (Cibolo) 4-1 (9)
San Marcos loaded its defense to slow Knights running back
Justin Stockton, so quarterback
L.G. Williams accepted the dare, completing 8 of 9 passes for 235 yards and three touchdowns in a 51-7 rout of the 3-2 Rattlers. Steele scored on all six first-half possessions and owned a 38-7 advantage at intermission. After an open date, the Knights begin District 28-5A action by hosting 2-3 King (Corpus Christi) on Oct. 11.
10. Pearland 4-0 (10)
The Oilers exploded for 42 first-quarter points in a 63-6 blowout of 2-2 Pasadena.
JaColbie Butler rushed for 171 yards and three touchdowns. The Pasadena touchdown was the first allowed by Pearland this season.

Zach Kanipes had defensive touchdowns. Next up is a home game against 0-3-1 Sam Rayburn (Pasadena) on Friday.
11. Skyline (Dallas) 3-1 (11)
Three times the Raiders rallied from deficits in a 42-28 victory over 1-3 Jesuit (Dallas) in a District 9-5A opener. Quarterback
Sederian Copeland threw for 169 yards and two touchdowns and rushed for 106 yards and two more scores.
Daleon Ward gained 131 yards on the ground. Up next is 1-3 Lake Highlands Dallas on Friday.
12. Smithson Valley (Spring Branch) 5-0 (12)
Coach Larry Hill utilized a host of skill players in a 61-18 rout of 2-3 King (Corpus Christi).
Garrett Smith completed 15 of 16 passes for 218 yards and five touchdowns as the Rangers built a 54-10 halftime lead. Following an open date, the Rangers begin District 25-5A play by hosting 3-2 San Marcos on Oct. 11.
13. Cedar Hill 3-2 (13)
Defensive end
Xavier Washington recovered a fumble and was in on five sacks in a 23-6 victory over 3-2 Duncanville. The Longhorns limited a Duncanville team averaging 461 yards per game to 35 yards in the first half. Offensively,
Peter Lewis led the way with 123 yards and two touchdowns. After an open date, the Longhorns will host 2-3 South Grand Prairie (Grand Prairie) on Oct. 11.
14. Martin (Arlington) 3-1 (14)
Josh Watson scored two touchdowns in the final three minutes of the first half to help the Warriors tame 1-3 Arlington 38-17 in a District 3-5A opener. Watson scored from a yard out on his only carry of the game followed a little over a minute later by a 23-yard return of a blocked punt. Martin built a 17-0 lead early and shut out the Colts in the second half. Up next is a Friday road trip to 0-4 Weatherford.
15. Manvel 3-1 (15)

Sophomore
Deriq King threw for 158 yards and three touchdowns and rushed for 129 yards and a score in the Mavericks' 40-0 defeat of 0-4 Pasadena Memorial (Pasadena) in a District 22-5A opener. The defense forced two turnovers and limited Memorial to 148 yards. Next is a Friday road encounter with 1-3 Alvin.
16. Bowie (Arlington) 3-1 (17)
In his return from injury,
Keaton Perry threw for 202 yards and four touchdowns in a 55-6 blasting of 0-5 Weatherford. Perry's replacement,
Tony James, threw for two scores and caught three of Perry's throws for 165 yards and three touchdowns. On Friday, Bowie goes on the road to take on 3-1 Paschal (Fort Worth).
17. Aledo 4-0 (19)
An 84-7 blowout of 0-4 Arlington Heights (Fort Worth) in a District 7-4A opener had Bearcats kicker
Chance Nevarez busy. Aledo scored on all 12 possessions and Nevarez was perfect on all 12 PATs, upping his career consecutive streak to 107, seven shy of the 5-year-old state record. Twelve PATs is one shy of the single game state record set in 1971. On Friday the Bearcats host 3-1 South Hills (Fort Worth).
18. Hendrickson (Pflugerville) 5-0 (22)
The workload for Oklahoma commit
Samaje Perine is greatly reduced from last season. A year ago, the running back finished with 246 carries. At the midpoint this season he has rushed 56 times. But the senior is making his chances count, witness 11 carries for 177 yards in a 48-6 landslide over 3-2 Cedar Ridge (Round Rock) in a District 16-5A opener. Next is a Thursday showdown with 4-1 Stony Point (Round Rock).
19. Mansfield Timberview (Arlington)5-0 (20)
Defense is the Wolves' game and they played it well yet again in a 27-0 blanking of 2-3 Mansfield. Timberview came up with five turnovers, including four fumble recoveries, and limited the Tigers to 104 total yards. One of the fumbles was recovered by
Alejandro Anzaldua for a touchdown. After an open date, Timberview will face its toughest task so far, a road trip to No. 1 DeSoto (5-0) on Oct. 11.
20. Horn (Mesquite) 5-0 (21)
The Jaguars exploded for 31 points in the second quarter of a 48-21 thumping of 3-2 Lee (Tyler) in a District 12-5A opener. The wild quarter included a 72-yard fumble return for a touchdown by
Christian Bacon and was capped by a 23-yard scoring pass from
Destri White to
Del'Michael High. On Friday, Horn travels to face 3-2 Rockwall and former coach Rodney Webb.
21. Cypress Creek (Houston) 4-0 (NR)
A 22-yard touchdown pass from
Ross Hargrove to
Matt Shoffner in overtime carried the Cougars to a 28-21 triumph over 3-1 Cypress Springs (Houston). A 2-yard touchdown run by
Terrell Aldridge (34 carries, 137 yards) with 25 seconds remaining in the fourth quarter tied the score to force overtime. Up next for the Cougars, now 3-0 in District 17-5A, is a Friday date with 1-3 Jersey Village (Houston).
22. Cedar Park 4-1 (16)
An 85-yard interception return for a touchdown by
Lane Waller cemented a 30-17 overtime road victory over 2-3 Leander in a District 25-4A opener.
Zach Hancock's 34-yard field goal allowed the Timberwolves to go to overtime and a 5-yard scoring run by
Joey Carter in the extra period gave Cedar Park its first lead of the second half. Next is a home game against 2-2 Marble Falls.
23. Madison (San Antonio) 4-1 (23)
Quarterback
Cody Ennis rushed for 149 yards and three touchdowns in a 28-26 victory over 3-2 Churchill (San Antonio) in a District 26-5A opener.
Alex Ardoin's 65-yard run in the fourth quarter supplied the winning points, but it took a defensive stop of a Churchill 2-point conversion pass with 11 seconds remaining for the Mavericks to avoid overtime. Up next is 3-2 Roosevelt (San Antonio) on Friday.
24. Judson (Converse) 4-1 (25)
Senior wide receiver
Andre Wilson turned six touches into four touchdowns in a 58-18 throttling of 1-3 Carroll (Corpus Christi). Wilson made three catches for 109 yards and two scores and rushed three times for 46 yards and two touchdowns.
D'Mauria Martin had a 40-yard interception return for a score and
Keivon Ramsey added an 82-yard punt return touchdown. Following an open date, the Rockets will begin District 25-5A play by hosting 0-5 Wagner (San Antonio) on Oct. 11.
25. Lake Travis (Austin) 3-1 (NR)
Varshaun Nixon rushed for two touchdowns and added a 76-yard punt return for a score in a 51-12 takedown of 1-4 Austin High (Austin). Quarterback
Dominic De Lira threw for 187 yards and two touchdowns in the District 15-5A opener. On Friday, the Cavaliers host 5-0 Bowie (Austin).
