Running against college and open
athletes, three high school standouts took over the national lead this
spring during the Larry Ellis Invitational in Princeton, N.J.
St. Benedict's Prep (Newark, N.J.) sophomore Edward Cheserek placed third in the
5,000-meter run in 14:02.33, which is a national sophomore class record
and also broke a New Jersey state record set in 1975.
In the girls
5,000, Megan Lacey of
Cherokee (Marlton, N.J.) took over the national
spring lead with a 13th-place time of 16:50.75.
Eddie Owens of
Packer Collegiate Institute (Brooklyn, N.Y.) placed seventh in the
3,000-meter steeplechase in 8:59.53, the best time in the nation this
year. He is just the fourth prep performer to finish under nine minutes.
CROUSERS STILL AT ITThe Crouser family of Gresham, Ore., continued to set records in the weight events over the weekend.
Senior Ryan Crouser of
Barlow (Gresham, Ore.) broke his own state shot put record with a heave of 72 feet, 7½ inches during the Centennial Invitational in Gresham. It also is No. 1 in the country this spring and No. 7 all-time.
Crouser also won the discus with a throw of 208-5, which bested the meet record held by his cousin, Sam Crouser of Gresham High.
Sam Crouser's sophomore sister, Haley, won the girls javelin with a throw of 173 feet, which is No. 6 all-time and bested her personal record by more than 10 feet. The national record is 176-5. She also won the 100-meter hurdles in 14.84 seconds.
Heritage (Vancouver, Wash.) standout Sean Keller broke the Washington record by winning the javelin with a throw of 232-1, which is No. 6 all-time.
KENDELL WILLIAMS SETS 2 RECORDSKell (Marietta, Ga.) sophomore star Kendell Williams won three events – setting two meet records – during the Volunteer Classic in Knoxville, Tenn. She set records in the high jump (5-10) and 100-meter hurdles (13.45) while also winning the 300 hurdles in 43 seconds. She twice cleared 5-11 in the high jump, but knocked the bar off with her heel.
Homewood (Ala.) senior Aaron Ernest won the 100 in a wind-aided 10.22 and also captured the 200 in 20.93.
GARTON TAKES NO. 2 IN JAVELINMill Valley (Shawnee, Kan.) senior Macauley Garton threw the javelin 212-11 – No. 2 in the nation this spring - during the 84th annual Kansas Relays in Lawrence, Kan.
Westminster Christian (St. Louis, Mo.) senior Daniel Everett won the Adidas Golden Stripes 1,600 qualifier in 4:12.58, while
Nerinx Hall (Webster Groves, Mo.) senior Colleen Quigley captured the girls 1,600 in 4:53.31.
POTPOURRI* Justin Fondren of
Oxford (Miss.) took over the national high jump lead when he cleared 7-2¼ during the Class 5A-Division 2 meet in Oxford, Miss.
