High school baseball rankings: Orange County showdown at Boras Classic could jumble MaxPreps Top 25

The Boras Classic in Southern California gets underway this week in Orange County and should have a profound influence on next week's MaxPreps Top 25 high school baseball rankings.

No. 2 Sierra Canyon (Chatsworth, Calif.) could face No. 11 Orange Lutheran in the second round. Meanwhile, No. 23 Yucaipa meets up with a Huntington Beach team, which is on the verge of entering the rankings.

No. 1 St. Mary's Prep (Orchard Lake, Mich.) gets a strong test this week when it plays a doubleheader with University Liggett and then takes on a pair of Ohio teams in St. Ignatius and Olentangy Orange.

Two-time MaxPreps national champion Sumrall is one game away from beginning postseason play. The Bobcats last went undefeated in 2009 when they won the first of back-to-back national championships with a 36-0 record.

Dropped out: No. 22 Stockdale (Bakersfield, Calif.); No. 24 Bixby (Okla.).

Coaching Milestone: Steve Chapman of Calallen (Corpus Christi, Texas) is closing in on Bobby Moegle of Monterey (Lubbock) as the state's all-time winningest coach. Chapman recently went over 1,100 career wins and now sits 1,105 — 10 wins away from tying Moegle (1,115).

Best game: St. Laurence 4, Marmion 3. The Vikings held a 3-1 lead before Marmion rallied with runs in the sixth and seventh to tie the game. St. Laurence scored the winning run on an error at third base that allowed Max Montgomery to score the winning run.

Player of the Week: Elijah Green, IMG Academy. Green went hitless in a loss to Miami Christian, which ended a streak of 10 games in which Green had a base hit. During that run, Green batted 22-for-30 including a streak of 10 straight basehits.

Games to watch: Calvary Christian vs. Berkeley Prep. Supremacy in the Tampa area will be determined over the weekend when No. 8 Calvary Christian meets No. 5 Berkeley Prep. The two teams play Friday and Saturday.
