MaxPreps 2016-17 All-Northern California Boys Basketball

This was another banner season for Northern California high school basketball with schools large, medium and small playing for regional championships, thanks to the efforts of players large, medium and small.
Also listed is the Coach of the Year.

Player of the Year — Jordan Brown, Woodcreek (Roseville), 6-foot-11, Junior
A three-year varsity standout and The Sacramento Bee Player of the Year, Brown was the focal point of the best team in Northern California, one that captured the Sierra Foothill, Sac-Joaquin Section Division I and Northern California Open Division championships. A national recruit, Brown averaged 26.5 points and 15.4 rebounds in going 32-3.

Coach of the Year — Arnold Zelaya, Mission (San Francisco)
A longtime coach for the Bears and a Bay Area native, Zelaya said some of his most challenging work isn't on the basketball court. It's being a positive role model for players who often come from troubled neighborhoods. Mission went 35-1 and won the CIF State Division III championship, becoming the first San Francisco public school to win a state title.

FIRST TEAM

G — Elishja Duplechan, Sheldon (Sacramento), 6-0, Sr.
A 6-foot ball-handling marvel with a reliable 3-point shot, Duplechan helped power the Huskies to an unbeaten Delta League campaign and into the finals of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I and Northern California Open Division tournaments, losing close games each time to Woodcreek. He averaged 18.6 points a game for a 30-4 team.

G — Niamey Harris, Mission (San Francisco), 6-3, Sr.
A first team San Francisco Chronicle All-Metro pick, Harris led the Bears to a 35-1 record and the CIF State Division III championship.

G — Damari Milstead, Moreau Catholic (Hayward), 6-2, Sr.
The Grand Canyon University-bound scoring star capped a four-year varsity career with 2,353 points, averaging 25.8 this season in leading his 25-10 team to the North Coast Section and Northern California Division II championship. He is the San Francisco Chronicle and Bay Area News Group Player of the Year, punctuated by a 43-point effort to beat Saint Francis (Mountain View) in the playoffs.

G — Jade' Smith, St. Joseph Notre Dame (Alameda), 6-3, Sr.
A first team San Francisco Chronicle and Bay Area News Group All-Metro pick, Smith averaged 17 points, nine rebounds and six assists for a 30-2 team that won the North Coast Section Division IV title and reached the Northern California Open Division tournament. He is headed to Pepperdine.

G — Jake Wojcik, Bellarmine College Prep (San Jose), 6-4, Jr.
The Bay Area News Group Peninsula Player of the Year led the Bells to an unbeaten West Catholic Athletic League championship and into the Northern California Open Division playoffs in going 25-3.

SECOND TEAM

G — James Akinjo, Salesian College Preparatory (Richmond), 6-0, Jr.
A fast-rising recruit, Akinjo averaged 13.2 points, 4.1 assists and 2.5 rebounds to lead the 27-5 Pride to the North Coast Section Division III title and a berth in the Northern California Open Division playoffs.

G — Drew Cobb, Sheldon (Sacramento), 6-3, Sr.
Perhaps the best defensive guard in Northern California, Cobb could also score inside and out for a 30-4 team that relied on defense to reach the finals of the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I and Northern California Open Division finals. Headed to West Georgia, Cobb averaged 10.2 points and 7.1 rebounds.

G — Logan Johnson, Saint Francis (Mountain View), 6-3,Jr.
The West Catholic Athletic League co-MVP and a first team San Francisco Chronicle All-Metro and Bay Area News Group pick. Johnson averaged 18 points and eight rebounds and drove the Lancers to the finals of the Northern California Division II tournament and a 21-10 record.

G — Tyrell Roberts, Woodcreek (Roseville), 5-10, Sr.
A Sacramento Bee first team All-Metro selection, Roberts was the floor leader for a Timberwolves team that went 32-3 and won the Sac-Joaquin Section Division I and Northern California Open Division titles. Headed to UC San Diego, Roberts averaged 15 points and eight assists.

F — Emeka Udenyi, De La Salle (Concord), 6-6, Jr.
Strong and physical inside, Udenyi's nine points and nine rebounds per game were paramount in the Spartans repeating as North Coast Section Division I champions and earning a Northern California Open Division berth in finishing 28-6. THIRD TEAM

G — Jimmy Beltz, Elliot Christian (Lodi), 6-0, Sr.
Beltz, first team All-Area by the Stockton Record, averaged 20 points and fueled his small-school powerhouse to the Sac-Joaquin Section Division V title and into the Northern California postseason as a giant-killer program with scores of victories over larger programs in the regular season in finishing 29-5 overall.

G — Keshawn Bruner, Burbank (Sacramento), 6-2, Sr.
Able to shoot the 3-pointer or power in for soaring dunks, Bruner was the force that drove the Titans to their first Sac-Joaquin Section semifinal appearance in 19 seasons. The Cal State East Bay-bound Bruner averaged 22.3 points for a 27-5 team in earning Sacramento Bee All-Metro honors.

G — Tim Falls, Dublin, 6-2, Sr.
Headed to Montana, Falls averaged 15 points in earning East Bay Athletic League MVP honors and first team All-Metro honors by the Bay Area News Group for a team that went 29-5.

F — Riley Grigsby, Archbishop Mitty (San Jose), 6-5, Jr.
Behind Grigsby's inside presence and 17-point, eight-rebound average, the Monarchs overcame a slow start to win the Central Coast Section Open Division championship. Mitty again advanced to the Northern California Open Division tournament in finishing 18-11.

G — Brian Perry, Beyer (Modesto), 6-0, Sr.
The Modesto Bee All-District Player of the Year, Perry led the Patriots to their first Sac-Joaquin Section championship game appearance and their first Northern California tournament showing. He averaged 20.9 points and set scores of school scoring records as Beyer went 23-10. FOURTH TEAM

G — Souley Boum, Oakland Tech, 6-3, Sr.
Averaging 16.8 points, Boum led the Bulldogs to a 26-5 record and into the Northern California playoffs.

G — Joey Calcaterra, Marin Catholic (Kentfield, Calif.), 6-3, Sr.
The Bay Area's leading scorer with a 29.5 average, Calcaterra led the Wildcats to the Marin County Athletic League regular season and postseason championships in going 19-12. He is headed to the University of San Diego.

G — Zach Chappell, Capital Christian (Sacramento), 6-2, Jr.
The floor leader for the Sac-Joaquin Section Division III champions, Chappell averaged 14.5 points and 3.5 rebounds. Capital Christian, which reached the Northern California Open Division playoffs, went 23-8 and had an 18-game winning streak snapped by eventual Open champion Woodcreek.

F — BJ Standley, St. Patrick-St. Vincent (Vallejo), 5-10, Sr.
A four-year starter, Standley led the Bruins to the CIF State Division IV championship. He averaged 15.5 points and 5.9 assists as his team went 28-7.

F — Kyree Walker, Moreau Catholic (Hayward), 6-6, Fr.
Walker doesn't look like a freshman and he doesn't play like one. He muscled and hustled his way to a 21 point, six rebound and four assist average for a Mariners team that won the Northern California Division II championship and went 25-10. The Bay Area News Group All-Metro teams ... click here
