Edgewood Academy (Elmore, Ala.) saw its 71-game win streak come to an end Friday with a 46-0 blowout loss to
Morgan Academy (Selma, Ala.).
Edgewood Academy had won 71 games in a row under former coach Bobby Carr dating back to Oct. 28, 2010.
However, Carr left the program during the summer to take a job as offensive coordinator with Autauga Academy.
Edgewood Academy was supposed to have four all-state players returning this year, but all four left following Carr's departure, according to the
Montgomery Advertiser.
The win streak was the longest active streak for an 11-man football team. Pahranagat Valley (Alamo, Nev.) is an 8-man football team with an active streak of 93 wins in a row.
The Wildcats also won five straight AISA state championships during the streak, six in a row total.
Morgan Academy is coming off a 4-6 season in 2015 with one of the losses being a 68-18 defeat at the hands of Edgewood Academy.
With Edgewood Academy's loss,
Valle Catholic (Ste. Genevieve, Mo.) has the longest active winning streak at 46 in a row. Valle Catholic was not affected by the upset bug as it defeated St. Vincent (Perryville, Mo.) 77-0 in its opener Friday.
Edgewood Academy was not the only team with a long win streak to suffer a loss.
Dillon (S.C.), which had the sixth-longest 11-man streak with 37 wins in a row, lost to No. 10-ranked Mallard Creek (Charlotte, N.C.), 7-3 Friday.
Meanwhile,
Crest (Shelby, N.C.) lost its opener to South Point (N.C.) 27-12 to end a 32-game win streak.
In other games featuring teams with long win streaks,
Kimberly (Wis.) stretched its win streak to 43 in a row with a 43-6 win over Oshkosh and
Soldotna (Alaska) won its opener last week to up its streak to 41 in a row.
