Georgia high school football is entering the final week of the regular season. Ahead is a look at each of Georgia's 40 regions and which teams figure to become region champions.
There are 19 teams that have clinched region titles. There are 16 winner-take-all games this week for region titles. Ten of them match winners from two sub-regions. The other six were part of the original regular-season schedule and just happen to match teams that are in first or second place in the standings.
The state playoffs begin Nov. 12.
CLASS AAAAA1 – Lowndes (Valdosta) (8-2) clinched the title two weeks ago, so a shocking 10-7 loss to last-place Tift County last week has no bearing. Lowndes has won this region seven of the past 10 seasons.
2 – Stephenson (Stone Mountain) (9-0) plays
King (Lithonia) (6-3) for the title Friday in a game between traditional rivals from DeKalb County. Stephenson is favored to win its eighth region title in 10 seasons.
3 - Camden County (Kingsland) (9-0) has clinched its 10th straight title in this region.
4 – McEachern (Powder Springs) (8-1) has clinched its second straight region title.
5 – Etowah (Woodstock) (8-1) has clinched its third region title in five seasons.
6 – Roswell (5-4) needs a victory Friday at
Milton (Alpharetta) (3-6) to clinch its first region title since 2005. Roswell last won a region title in 2005.
7 – North Gwinnett (Suwanee) (9-0) successfully defended its title.
8 – Brookwood (Snellville) (8-1) would dethrone two-time defending champion
Grayson (Loganville) with a victory Friday at
Berkmar (Lilburn) (3-6). Brookwood beat Grayson (6-3) 10-0 last week. It would be Brookwood's fourth region title in six years.
CLASS AAAA1 – No. 1-ranked
Northside (Warner Robins) (9-0) has clinched its seventh region title in 10 years. Northside won Region 1-AAAAA in 2009 but moved down to AAAA this season.
2 – Statesboro (7-2) plays at
Brunswick (7-2) on Friday. Statesboro beat Brunswick 21-12 in the season opener Aug. 27, but that didn't count in the standings because these southeast Georgia schools are in different sub-regions.
3 – Starr's Mill (Fayetteville) (9-0) plays at
Griffin (9-0) on Friday for the title.
4 – Lovejoy (9-0) has clinched its first title since 2004.
5 – Kell (Marietta) (9-0) can win the title with a victory against
Chapel Hill (Douglasville) (4-5) on Friday.
6 – Tucker (9-0) has won its sixth region title in 10 seasons, first since 2007.
7 – Chattahoochee (Alpharetta) (9-0) has clinched its first region title since 2003.
8 – Clarke Central (Athens) (9-0) plays at
Flowery Branch (9-0) on Friday for the title. This was a regularly scheduled game, unlike the 10 region championships that were set up between sub-region champions that were not determined until this week.
CLASS AAA1 – Cairo (9-0) plays at
Americus-Sumter (6-3) on Friday for the title. This was a regularly scheduled game. Cairo, ranked No. 3 in most polls, is heavily favored.
2 – Baldwin (Milledgeville) (9-0) plays at
Peach County (Fort Valley) (9-0) on Friday for the title. This was a regularly scheduled game. Peach is the defending Class AAA champion.
3 – Thomson (8-1) plays at
Burke County (Waynesboro) (7-2) on Friday for the title. They are the sub-region champions. Though Burke has the lesser won-lost record, the Bears are ranked and favored to win.
4 – Sandy Creek (Tyrone) (9-0) has clinched the title. Sandy Creek won Class AAAA last season and dropped into AAA.
5 – Cedar Grove (Ellenwood) (6-3) will play at
Grady (Atlanta) (8-1) on Friday for the title. Cedar Grove's last region title was 1991. Grady's was 2006.
6 – Carrollton (9-0) has clinched the title, its 28th in history.
7 – Allatoona (Acworth) (8-1) plays at
Ridgeland (Rossville) (9-1) on Friday for the title. Allatoona, a two-year-old school in Cobb County, beat Ridgeland 17-14 on Sept. 3.
8 – White County (Cleveland) (8-1) plays at
Gainesville (8-1) on Friday for the title. Gainesville is seeking its third straight region title. White County has never won one. Gainesville beat White County 31-22 on Sept. 3.
CLASS AA1 – Cook (Adel) (9-0) has clinched its first title since 2001.
2 – Tattnall County (Reidsville) (8-1) plays at
McIntosh County Academy (Darien) (6-3) on Friday for the title. McIntosh won a region title in 2008. Tattnall has never won one.
3 – Swainsboro (9-0) has clinched its first region title since 2007.
4 – Putnam County (Eatonton) (8-2) has clinched its first region title since 2001.
5 – Carver (Columbus) (9-0) has clinched its fourth straight region title, first in AA. Carver won Region 2-AAA in 2009 and moved down in classification.
6 – Westminster (Augusta) (7-2) plays at
Buford (8-1) on Friday for the title. Buford has won or shared nine straight region titles. Westminster shared the 2009 title with Buford and last won an outright title in 2007.
7 – Rockmart (7-2) plays at
Calhoun (9-0) on Friday for the title. Calhoun can win its 10th straight region title. Rockmart, a big underdog here, last won a region title in 1988.
8 – Fannin County (Blue Ridge) (6-3) plays at
Elbert County (Elberton) (8-1) on Friday for the title. Elbert last won a region title in 1996, the year of its only state title. Fannin won a region title in 2007.
CLASS A1 – Mitchell County (Camilla) (8-1) has clinched the title. Seminole County (6-3) forfeited its game against Mitchell County on Oct. 1 because too many players were suspended from a game the previous week in which there was a fight.
2 – Clinch County (Homerville) (9-0) can clinch the title with a victory over
Charlton County (Folkston) (8-1) on Friday. If Charlton wins, the title probably will go to defending state champion
Wilcox County (Rochelle) (8-1).
3 – Johnson County (Wrightsville) (9-0) will win the title with a victory over
Claxton (5-4) on Friday. It would be Johnson County's first since 2005.
4 – Marion County (Buena Vista) (9-0) has clinched the first region title in school history.
5 – Eagle's Landing Christian Academy (McDonough) (9-0) will play
Wesleyan (Norcross) (9-0) on Friday for the title. Wesleyan won region titles in 2008 and 2009, while ELCA's latest came in 1997 as part of the Georgia Independent School Association.
6 – Darlington (Rome) (8-1) has won its region for the second straight year.
7 – Wilkinson County (Irwinton) (7-2) will play at
Lincoln County (Lincolnton) (8-1) on Friday for the title. This was a regularly schedule game and not a region playoff.
8 – Athens Academy (8-1) has won its sixth region title in 10 years, first since 2007.
