5A Region 1 recap October 1, 2013
Lewisburg was the team that gained the most ground in the standings this week, jumping from sixth to fourth in 5A Region 1. Earlier in the week, the Patriots triumphed over Center Hill 31-28.
Adding to the longest winning streak in the league this week, Oxford beat West Point 30-20. The win marks fifth in a row for the the Chargers.
Greg Young was a key player and the best on defense this week as Clarksdale defeated New Hope. He.
Reggie Miller was the best receiver in the league this week as Saltillo topped Lake Cormorant. Malik Randolph helped Saltillo's passing attack out by catching 2 balls for 14 yards.
Lake Cormorant's Bailey Walker and Ryan Golden have formed a dream team this season, leading 5A Region 1 in both passing and receiving yards. Walker has thrown for 1,161 yards this season, while Golden, a 5-foot-9 receiver, has 23 catches for 465 yards. Diamante Pounds from the Tigers leads the league in rushing with 975 yards.
The top two teams in the league will face off this week when first place Oxford takes on second place Saltillo. Last week, Oxford beat the Green Wave, while Saltillo defeated Nick Nester's team.
Pounds of the Pat Byrd's team is only 25 yards short of surpassing 1,000 rushing yards for the season. Pounds has rushed for 975 yards on 146 carries so far this year.
The Tigers' offense has racked up 183 points this season, earning them the top spot in the league, while the Chargers have allowed only 70 on the year.
The Wildcats scaled the state rankings by moving to 81 from 112 this week, the biggest jump in the league. Clarksdale was able to move up by besting the Trojans 56-21.
