After flying high against the Alexander Cougars two weeks ago, The Newnan Cougars came back down to earth. Newnan was beaten by Langston Hughes 47-14 on Friday. While losing is never fun, Newnan can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' Georgia football rankings (they are ranked 186th, while Langston Hughes is ranked tenth).
When it comes to explaining why Newnan lost, one person who can't be blamed is Gus Anderson. Despite the final result, he picked up 104 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Justus Savage continued his habit of posting crazy stat lines for Langston Hughes, rushing for 217 yards and two touchdowns while picking up 12.1 yards per carry. Savage was no stranger to the big play, turning on the jets for a run that went for 55 yards. The team also got some help courtesy of Prentiss air Noland, who threw for 224 yards and two touchdowns.
Newnan's defeat dropped their record down to 3-5. As for Langston Hughes, their win was their eighth straight on the road (dating back to last season), which bumped their overall record up to 6-2.
Newnan will challenge Douglas County at 7:30 p.m. on Friday. Douglas County is currently enjoying a perfect season and no doubt want to keep things rolling. As for Langston Hughes, they will look to defend their home field on Friday against South Paulding at 7:30 p.m. South Paulding will be hoping to continue their four-game streak of scoring more points each game than the last.
