Lugoff-Elgin has enjoyed the comforts of home their last two games, but now they'll head out on the road. They just played last night, but they'll still head out to face the Westwood Redhawks at 6:00 p.m. on January 16th. Hopefully Lugoff-Elgin focused on turnovers this week since the team gave up 32 on Monday.
Lugoff-Elgin suffered their biggest loss since December 11, 2023 on Monday. They were dealt a 84-51 defeat at the hands of Trinity Collegiate. While losing is never fun, Lugoff-Elgin can't take it too hard given the team's big disadvantage in MaxPreps' South Carolina basketball rankings (they are ranked 152nd, while Trinity Collegiate is ranked 23rd).
Despite the defeat, Lugoff-Elgin got a solid performance out of Jillian Rush, who scored 26 points along with nine rebounds and two steals. As a matter of fact, that's the most points Rush has scored all season. Another player making a difference was Alicia Jefferson, who scored six points.
Meanwhile, winning is just a little bit easier when you outrebound your opponent 15 to 7 on the offensive boards, a fact Westwood proved on Saturday. They managed a 50-44 victory over Lower Richland.
Westwood can attribute much of their success to Destiny Omeire, who dropped a double-double on 17 points and ten rebounds. That's the first time this season that Omeire scored 15 or more points. Makiah Thompson was another key contributor, scoring 12 points along with five assists.
Lugoff-Elgin bumped their record down to 3-14 with that loss, which was their fifth straight at home. As for Westwood, their victory bumped their record up to 11-6.
Tuesday's contest is one where the number of possessions is likely to be a big factor: Lugoff-Elgin have been smashing the glass this season, having only averaged 38.8 rebounds per game. It's a different story for Westwood, though, as they've been averaging only 20.8 rebounds per game. Given these competing strengths, it'll be interesting to see how their clash plays out.
Lugoff-Elgin was dealt a bruising 60-20 loss at the hands of Westwood when the teams last played back in January of 2023. The matchup was all but decided by halftime, at which point Lugoff-Elgin was down 42-13.
