Overton and Kirby are an even 3-3 against one another since February of 2015, but not for long. The Overton Wolverines will be playing in front of their home fans against the Kirby Cougars at 6:00 p.m. on Tuesday. The teams are on pretty different trajectories at the moment (Overton has five straight victories, Kirby has five straight losses), but none of that matters once you're on the field.
Overton has made a habit of sweeping their opponents off the court, having now won three matchups by 21 points or more this season. They blew past Craigmont 48-27. Given Overton's advantage in MaxPreps' Tennessee basketball rankings (they are ranked 85th, while Craigmont is ranked 287th), the result on Friday wasn't entirely unexpected.
Overton found their leader in underclassman Kierra Baldwin, who dropped a double-double on 24 points and 10 steals. The matchup was Baldwin's third in a row with at least ten points. The team also got some help courtesy of Nia Smith, who scored 8 points along with 11 rebounds and 3 steals.
Meanwhile, Kirby had to suffer through a rough 63-18 loss at the hands of Collierville.
Overton's victory was their third straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 5-1. As for Kirby, their loss dropped their record down to 1-5.
Overton won a matchup that couldn't have been any closer in their previous meeting back in December of 2022, slipping by Kirby 45-44. Does Overton have another victory up their sleeve, or will Kirby turn the tables on them? We'll have the answer soon enough.
