For the first time this season, Coral Gables will have a chance to prove themselves in a conference matchup on Thursday. They will be playing in front of their home fans against the Ferguson Falcons at 3:30 p.m. Coral Gables will be strutting in after a victory while Ferguson will be coming in after a loss.
Coral Gables barely beat Coral Park the last time the pair played, but that sure wasn't the case this time around. Coral Gables blew past Coral Park 10-1 on Wednesday. The Cavaliers haven't had any issues with the Rams recently, as the game was their seventh consecutive win against them.
Kevon Caffey made a splash no matter where he played. He looked comfortable on the mound, tossing five innings while giving up just one earned run off three hits. Caffey was also solid in the batter's box, scoring two runs and stealing two bases while getting on base in two of his four plate appearances.
In other batting news, Alex Carmona was excellent, scoring a run and stealing a base while going 2-for-4. Timothy Negron was another key player, scoring a run while going 2-for-5.
Meanwhile, Ferguson was not able to break out of their rough patch on Wednesday as the team picked up their third straight defeat. They came up short against ABF Academy, falling 10-3. For those keeping track at home, that's the biggest loss the Falcons have suffered since February 21, 2024.
Ryan Alfonso was cooking despite his team's loss, scoring two runs and stealing a base while going 2-for-3. He has been hot recently, having also posted at least one stolen base the last three times he's played. Another player making a difference was Justin Rodriguez, who scored a run and stole a base while going 3-for-4.
Ferguson's defeat dropped their record down to 1-3-1. As for Coral Gables, their victory bumped their record up to 2-3-1.
The pitchers for both teams better look sharp on Thursday as neither team is afraid to steal. Coral Gables has been swiping bases left and right this season, having averaged 2.7 stolen bases per game. However, it's not like Ferguson struggles in that department as they've been averaging 2.8 stolen bases. The only question left is which team can snag more.
Coral Gables suffered a grim 12-5 defeat to Ferguson when the teams last played back in March of 2024. Can Coral Gables avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
