Football Game Preview: Jonesboro Hurricane vs. Southside Mavericks + Official Tickets

The Jonesboro Hurricane will take on the Southside Mavericks at 7:00 p.m. on Friday. Expect the scorekeeper to be kept busy: if their previous games are any indication, these teams will really light up the scoreboard.

As a matter of fact, Jonesboro put up the most points they have all season on Friday. They blew past West Memphis, posting a 56-25 win. Given the Hurricane's advantage in MaxPreps' Arkansas football rankings (they are ranked 41st, while the Blue Devils are ranked 140th) , the win wasn't entirely unexpected.

Jonesboro got their victory on the backs of several key players, but it was Asa Myers out in front who threw for 167 yards and four touchdowns on only 15 passes, and also punched in one rushing score. Myers' passing game has become a key predictor of the Hurricane's success: the team is 3-1 when his passer rating is 100 or higher, but only 2-4 otherwise. Jonesboro's leading receiver Kameron Davis was Myers' top target yet again, picking up 150 receiving yards and three scores.

Jonesboro was unstoppable on the ground and finished the game with 227 rushing yards. That strong performance was nothing new for the team: they've now rushed for at least 154 rushing yards in six consecutive matchups.

Meanwhile, there's no place like home for Southside, who bounced back after a loss on the road two weeks ago. They secured a 37-31 W over Siloam Springs on Friday.

The win got Jonesboro back to even at 5-5. As for Southside, their victory bumped their record up to 6-4.

Friday's game might be decided on the ground. Jonesboro has been unstoppable on the ground this season, having averaged 218.8 rushing yards per game. However, it's not like Southside struggles in that department as they've been averaging 186.8 rushing yards. There's a good chance Friday's contest turns into a tough fight on the ground.

Jonesboro suffered a grim 53-27 defeat to Southside in their previous matchup back in November of 2023. Can the Hurricane avenge their loss or is history doomed to repeat itself? We'll find out soon enough.
