Even though the Aiken Falcons have not done well against the Hughes BIG RED recently (they were 2-7 in their previous nine matchups), they didn't let the past get in their way on Tuesday. Everything went Aiken's way against Hughes as Aiken made off with a 70-50 win. Given Aiken's advantage in MaxPreps' Ohio basketball rankings (they are ranked 54th, while Hughes is ranked 233rd), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Aiken got their win on the backs of several key players, but it was James Burnett out in front who scored 15 points along with five steals. The team also got some help courtesy of Jaiden Arnold, who scored 12 points along with three steals and two blocks.
Hughes lost despite a true team effort on the offense, the best among them being Jayvion Stanford, who scored eight points along with six rebounds. Another player making a difference was Elijah Engleman, who scored eight points along with six rebounds and two steals.
Aiken's victory was their seventh straight on the road, which pushed their record up to 10-4. As for Hughes, they are on a four-game losing streak that has dropped them down to 7-7.
Both teams will have to hit the road in their upcoming games. Aiken's road trip will continue as they head out to face Withrow at 7:30 p.m. on January 23rd. As for Hughes, they will square off against New Richmond at 7:30 p.m. on Tuesday.
