The Caliche Buffaloes came tearing into Friday's matchup with three straight wins (a stretch where they outscored their opponents by an average of 10.3 points) and they left with even more momentum. They came out on top in a nail-biter against Holyoke and snuck past 47-45. Given Caliche's advantage in MaxPreps' Colorado basketball rankings (they are ranked 81st, while Holyoke is ranked 227th), the result wasn't entirely unexpected.
Multiple players turned in solid performances to lead Caliche to victory, but perhaps none more so than Ryann Svoboda, who scored six points along with 13 rebounds and three steals. That's the first time this season that Svoboda pulled down eight or more rebounds. Karsyn Huss was another key contributor, scoring ten points along with three steals.
Holyoke's loss shouldn't obscure the performances of Ellie Kleve, who scored 17 points along with nine rebounds, and Anessa Colglazier who scored eight points along with 23 rebounds and six steals. That's the first time this season that Kleve scored 15 or more points. The team also got some help courtesy of Audrey Talavera, who scored 12 points along with six assists.
Even though they lost, Holyoke were working as a unit and finished the game with 12 assists. That's the most assists they've managed all season.
Caliche's win ended a five-game drought at home dating back to last season and bumped them up to 5-1. As for Holyoke, this is the second loss in a row for them and nudges their season record down to 2-5.
Both teams are looking forward to the support of their home crowds in their upcoming games. Caliche will take on Weldon Valley at 5:00 p.m. on Tuesday. As for Holyoke, they will be playing at home against Haxtun at 4:00 p.m. on Tuesday. Haxtun is still on the hunt for that elusive first 'W'.
